not to go against the grain. but i actually regret going with my 4.10's.

im just not down with the fact that i end up having to go WOT in 5th in a race = /

all i gotta say is you better have lots of power to back up that OD gear. once you hit 112mph for those highway pulls, or you can watch those stock geared M6's spank you from 115~

With 27" tire, bot-ons and 4.10s I trap arround 112-113 at about 6k in 4th. Seems to me the 4.10s are ideal for BO cars but throw in a cam and 4.30s+ are better. I am thinking of the 4.56s. Will I be OK with a 27" tire?

Just running through the calculator at http://www.f-body.org/gears

With 4.10's, trapping 112-113, you're probably at ~5800 when you trap.

According to the calculator, 4.56's would slow you down, because you'd have to shift to 5th (top out at 108).

4.30's would probably gain you a little bit of mph/et, because it puts you just past peak powerband at the traps. Worth the expense of a gear swap? Probably not.

Now, the way I would play the game would be to run 28" ET Drags (which are actually about 28.5"), and with 4.56's, that'd put you at pretty much the same spot as the 4.30's & 27" tire. With the Drags and the gear, you'd 60' a little better, so your ET would drop.

Back in the day of the big Stock Internals race (back when it was mid 11's), the M6 cars that were going at it were pretty much all running 4.56 gears with 28" ET Drags, and were trapping around 118.

be prepared for traction problems or broken ring and pinion with sticky tires unless this is going in something other than the 10 bolt

Sounds like you need more info. This will be going into a 9" and the motor should rev to about 7k in that car.

I was actually thinking of going with something like a 3.90 or 3.73. I can barely get some traction on the street with the stock 3.42's thats just N/A. If I have 4.10's or 4.56's I doubt I would get any traction at all. You guys with 4.10's or 4.56's must be shifting into 5th at the drag strip and get next to no traction on the street. I wouldnt be spinning my engine up to anywhere near 7K. My cars power peaks out around 6300-6400 (TR 224/stock heads) and I bet I would definately be shifting into 5th in the quarter with 4.56's. Correct me if I am wrong but traction and tires must dissapear on the street with 4.10's or more.

Some of you guys need to buy some better tires.

The stock f1's are horrible, m/t drag radials are a pretty good cure for most of the traction problems. Currently running the 4.10's in my h/c n2o car and think I'm going either 4.30's or 4.46 with a spool next.

I have 4.33's and Ive been considering swapping in some 4.56's to use a 28" tire at the track. Us 6speed guys sure do have it easy on the highway

I use drag radials all the time on the street and still limited traction on the street thats with the stock 3.42's. M/T Drag radials would probably last no more than 3,000 miles of street use. I know those gears will probably be the best for the track with slicks and maximum traction. But I bet a lot of you have to play the chase game on the street with people that probably have less power, mods and stock gears because they can get traction on the street and get a huge jump. I am just playing devils advocate here but I really dont think I am to far off.

Lol I've played the catch up game. Your probably right 4.10's or greater are probably not the fastest on the street. But they sure are fun.

If your not going to run a 28" tire stick with 4.11s or less, I would run out of gear on 26's if I sprayed. Now my car will do over 130 in 4th with 4.11's and 28" tires. That is why I'm going with no less than 4.30's next time around.

I love my 4.56's. Tons of fun, and is a monster out of the hole. (If I get any kind of traction...lol )

Thats what I thought I would hear. It all depends on what you want to set your car up for. If you want to get traction from a stop or low speeds on the street you may want to stick with a different gear than a 4.10 or 4.56. Will they work, work well and can still get similar gas mileage around town, yes. But as far as any wot traction with mods on the street you almost need slicks to get any traction. I will probably go with a 4.10 UNLESS I can get a 3.90 (or something along those lines). It all depends on what you looking for.

It is up to you and the type of driving you do. I will run a 4.56 on a 255/50/16 MT DR. With the 4.10s they would not turn over on a punch at all. I am curious about how the 4.56's and added power will do. I am hoping I do not run out of gear in the 1/4 with these but I intend to wind it up to 7k or so. Next set of tires will be 27" tall.
