Default 2.73 to 3.73

Just wanted to say hey to everyone, since I'm new the board and this is my first post.

I just recieved my 3.73s and install kit for the car and was wondering about how much the average install would cost for this job, and what kinda difference I can expect to see. (I know pretty huge, but I like to hear you guys say it, haha). thanks,

Welcome to the board.

Install prices vary but I would expect $150 - $250 for a gear swap, maybe $300 at a dealer.

On an A4 without a high stall torque converter, I would expect .3 and 2 mph in the 1/4.

do you have an HPP3 or something to correct the speedo?

A stall converter will probably be next, just a little worried cause I've already been through one trans, and I wasn't even that hard on it. I don't have a Hypertech yet, I seen SLP had a Recalib kit for like 150 and was gonna look into that, but if i can find a cheap used hypertech on here I'll probably just go that route.

You need the HPP3 to raise your rev limiter and up your shift points. It will be worth a tenth in an auto.
You might know this but the 3.73's won't work unless you get a new 3-series carrier. (since you have 2.73's). Just call SLP and they can send you one. They were running a special 2 weeks ago for $85. This is an absolutely great price for a brand new unit. It's what they take out of all the SS's and WS6's before they put their Zexel's in.
I dropped .35 going to 3.73's but only gained 1.5 mph. Traction has a lot to do with it.

A couple of companies make "3" series gears that fit "2" series carries. I had that set up on a 1996 Z28 and it worked just fine. The only draw back was that the richmond gears that I used were a little noisey. Didn't bother me but might bother some.BTW I'm going to use this set up on my 1999Z after I get my vig 3200 in. 2.73s suck>
P.S.: The price for the differential from SLP is great, I might pick one up just in case I break my rear end.

My switch from 2:73's to 3:73's put me in the high 12's on the stock tires, stock stall convertor and just a few mods. Good luck and have fun you wont regret it!!!

Thanks for the replies guys, Yeh i ordered them from AMS racing, and they said these richmond gears would fit the 2 series carrier. my best on motor has been like 13.6 @ 104 so we'll see what this puts me at..

It's just a taller/ thicker gear, and it's stronger than a "3-series".
I think you need a HPP3 for the computer, I don't think you can just re-cal it. The only thing that sucks with the HPP3 and changing gears is that it will not downshift hardly at all.

Don't forget to change the ABS reluctor wheel if you don't have ASR on the car. Otherwise your brakes won't work.
