tell me wich is faster 5th with 4.10 or 4th with 3.42?

i think 4.10 is faster but when you hit 5th its al over......

at what speed do you have to put in 5th gear? 120?

anyhow a top speed burst would prolly be done in 5th.

Consider this.

3.42 = in the area of 170mph -180mph depending how muchpower you got.
3.73 = 170 or a lil more
4.10 = 150 or so
I have been over 160 in my car with a correct speedometer

yeah i have to disagree with the statement about not being able to go over 150 with 4.10's ive had mine for a long time and have pegged out my speedo several times with the tach still climbing, somewhere in the area of 165~ MPH and yes,.... my speedo is DEAD on.

this is a very easy way to understand the gear concept.

you will out accelerate stock for stock every gear against a lower numerical rear-end gear car.

i.e
take 2 cars, identical dyno numbers and track times with identical drivers. one with
4.10's and the other with 3.42.....

if u run each car gear for gear against each other you will see that 3rd gear with 4.10's will be much stronger than the 3.42.....till 3rd gear runs out in the 4.10 car.. then here comes mr. stock gear spankin your *** till he has to hit 4th. this is a repeat process. which will really start to show the fast you get goin...

a lot of people dont understand that 5th gear is an overmultiplication in the T56. the idea is to run your 1:1 (4th) as long as possible while making the most power.

im sure most of the 4.10 owners dread racing a stock geared 6speed on the highway because they know the race is over past 115...

off allllll the mods i have, i wish i could take back the gears.

anyone wanna trade for there stock 3.42 rear-end????

I like my 2.73's on my DD

Why you ask? hehehe hahaha
My LT1 does 140+ pretty easy with just a tune and CAI.

4.10's.... not so much. But thats a drag gear.
Depends on what you want.

http://www.f-body.org/gears/

Year 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th
1993 3.36 2.07 1.35 1.00 0.80 0.62 (std)
1993 2.97 2.07 1.43 1.00 0.80 0.62 (G92)
1994+ 2.66 1.78 1.30 1.00 0.74 0.50

T-56 gear ratios.

1994 Auto/MX0 3.06 1.63 1.00 0.70 -- -- 2.73 (GU3)
1994 Auto/MX0 3.06 1.63 1.00 0.70 -- -- 3.23 (GU5)

Play with these numbers for awhile. You can see where given cars have a mechanicla gearinf advantage at given speeds. I have 4.10's and have to shift to 5th at 117 at which point a 3.42 car gas a 0.39 total maechanical advantage on me. They shift to 5th at 134 at which point I have a 0.50 mechanical advantage through 150+. It is all there for you.

I have 4:10's and havent got them in yet and still debating on it. I rool through the 1/4 at the top of third at 118 and not sure what improvement would be with the 4:10. My old car I went from 3.42 to 4.10's and when I ran my buddies mustang with the stock gears I would walk off very easy and pull bus lenths. With the 4;10's it was all the car would do to get 2 cars on him......So im still debating

Top speed will be more related to which engine is in its best power rpm at its highest speed. The only reason a 4.10 geared car would be slower top speed is if it is pulling too slow an rpm at its highest speed. It may have to be in 6th gear to do this but 6th gear with 4.10's is much more usuable than 6th with 3.42's. When you mod the car to make more power the rpm range would change.

When I got my 4.10's I hated them. Felt like I lost
alot of speed, especially on the street.
I blew the posi & put another rear in with 3.42's
over the winter. Car definitly feels slower.
Probably will go with 3.73's
or 3.90's when I get my new rear (9" or Dana 60)
