Default SWAPING REAR!!

OK I belive I have 2:73 or 3:23 I am not 100% sure. But I am changing them to 4:10's but am I able to just swap the gears or do I have to do anything else to the rear. Is the computer going to be a big deal on this or will it have to be programmed for the 4:10's. Thanks for all the help everyone!!!

1998 LS1 A4 to my knowledge most of them came with 3:23's. I have heard of some with 2:73's though. One way to know is look at the codes inside the driver's side door. GU2 = 2:73, GU5 = 3:23. Mine came with 3:23's.

Well, you'll probably have to replace the stock paddle pin thing with the 2 piece from SLP. Also you'll most likely need to do some shimming etc... As for the computer, you'll either have t have it reprogrammed for the new gears, or you can buy the HPP3 and do it there, or you can buy a speedo corrector from one of the sponsors here, otherwise you'll be putting miles on the odometer faster then you're actually putting miles on the car, and the speedo will make you think you're really flying when you're not

Yes ABSOLUTELY you will need to change the computer when upgrading the gears to 4.10 or 3.73.

Not sure what your mod level is but for most A4's 4.10's is a steep gear. You would get more performance gain from a Converter.

Not sure how many answers your looking for..

Now after finding your signature in another post...

With the mods shown (blower & Y3000) I would not go with 4.10.. unless you planning to run some serious RPMS... infact I would stick with the 3.23's and look at getting a PY3400E.

Hey thanks for the replies .. and sorry for the confusion WILUWAX.. but i don't have a blower yet.. i just wnated gears for now till i saved up for a good rear end for drag racing but for auto crossing as well. So any ideas on which ones to get and if it is even possible to change my rear end to 4 10s right now since i have 2:73s

If you plan on autocrossing too.. then you need to talk with Patrick G. He's done a little of that with an Auto car before.. plus he know's a little about converters

I'm betting he'll suggest a PY-3400E converter and 3.73's... Or maybe a ST-3500.

Wilwaxu is right, 4.10 gears are a waste unless all you plan on doing is running 1/4 mile with huge tires 24/7. First gear is useless on radials (even BFG D/Rs and Nittos) with 4.10s and marginal with 3.73s.

The absolute BEST gears for autocrossing are the 3.23 gears. Why? Because you can do nearly the entire course in 2nd gear. With a good converter like a Yank Super Thruster 3500, you can 60' like a raped ape, power out of slow turns in 2nd gear on the autocross, and still make excellent top-end efficiency without a lot of excessive heat. 2nd gear (with 3.23 gears) is good for 35-90 mph, making it effective for the majority of autocross speeds.

With 4.10 gears, your 2nd gear will only be good from 25-70 mph...meaning you'll spend a lot of time shifting into the bottom of 3rd gear. If I were running on top of 2nd gear and your were in the bottom of 3rd, I'd probably pass you on the autocross.

In drag racing, I've found that gears only account for a maximum of 1 tenth gain once you have a really good converter. If you're currently running the Yank 3000, you'd do much faster with a ST3500 and the gears you have than a switch to 4.10 gears and the Y3000.
