Well I got it set up, tried about every shim combination available

I settled with a .031 pinion shim, .011 backlash.

The pattern looks like the top pattern in this picture from richmond gear.
It drives quiet so far, it's pretty late here but I drove about the same distance as the other set ups that had noise.

It still has that hissing noise that varies with vehicle speed only coasting.
It has new bearings now and 24 inch pound pinion preload.

I can't help but wonder if that AAM cover I put on that directs oil to the axle tubes is starving the front pinion bearing, I did make the drainback slots as per instructions.

The last front pinion bearing I took out was blue at the tips of the big end of the tapered bearings where they ride on the race. No idea what would cause this.
Comments are welcome and all the previous help was useful and appreciated.

Glad to hear that you made a decision and got it done.

So, did you learn anything ??

Yes. Don't get me wrong, I've done plently of GM 8.5's, 8.2's, old 7.5's, ford 8.8's, a 14 bolt GM. The last one I did was a custom 4x4 with a Dana 30 front and 8.8 rear. I put 4.56's in the front and rear in less time than this one rear took me.

What did I learn is that I don't do it often enough to remember what does what, and looking at the contact pattern requires the judgement of a pro that sets up gears often.
I do appreciate the help.

Great news! I talked to the guys at Next Level Performance, and they said the backlash was set correctly, everything was perfect before he put them in. I noticed today that the gear whine is not bad anymore, and the hissing sound is barely there. I guess I worried about nothing, NLP is a GREAT shop! I’m going to call them again just to tell them the hissing sound is barely there anymore.
