Default Drivetrain problem, need help diagnosing

I went to the track last week (and ran the factory tires). On the way to the track and at the track the car ran fine. On the way home I noticed a howling sound that seemed to be coming from the rear end. It only happened between 45 mph and 60 mph, in any gear, when I would accelerated. It didn't matter how slowly I would accelerate, as long as my foot was touching the gas pedal it would howl. While coasting or deccelarating the car is fine. The problem still exists and I can't figure out what it is. Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks,

Mine does the same thing, I've been told that I overstressed the gears. Didn't really start doing it until I ran back to back 1.6 60ft times at the track. As long as it's not grinding, I think it'll be fine for a while, I'm just gonna run mine til I kill it, then get a 12 bolt.

Thanks for the reply!

I was thinking about going to 4.10 gears so maybe that will solve the problem (for now).

Very impressive 60' times!

what gear do you have? when I got my moser 12 bolt and 3.73 gear I took it easy for a while so I wouldn't get excessive whine. but I do get a bit of noticable whine at accel. it's normal I guess. I kind of like it but when I have the cutout open I can't hear it for anything.

HEheh Yea you have gear whine. And 4.10 will not solve it. They will (might) be quiet at first but they will soon be louder than your stockers. If you dont like the gear whine i suggest you dont go to a higher numeric gear. But hey some have quiet gears. My old 4.10's werent at all! But the 4.30's in the 12 bolt are silent...

I have the stock 3.42 10 bolt rearend and my best 60' was 2.19 sec. So I was kinda suprised when I heard the rearend howling.

If its normal for gears to whine, Then that's O.K. with me. I'm just concerned that I damaged something. After all it didn't howl before I went to the track.

I thought that if a newly installed rearend whined it was because it wasn't setup with the proper tolerances and it was irrelevant what the gear ratio was. I'm I mistaken?

No your correct in a sence. MY 4.10 were quiet to begin with. But like your gears a fiew times to the track didnt help matters. a higher numerical gear has a higher chance of whining. The pinion gear is smaller the higher numerically you go, so the less metal there to absorb the sound. Plus if you get a richmond gear or another race type gear they are made out of a diff. metal and tend to whine more. But you are correct in saying they whine if they are not setup perfict. But the tolerance is SMALl. And the puny 10 bolt dont help matters an as far as absorbing sound..

P.S. i would NOT say your whine on stock gearing is normal. Its not. But i also would say it's probly not hurting anything IMO. Just they werent set up perfict from the factory. Not anything new just not mormal.

P.P.S hehe It could also be a bearing and not gears at all. But I would think that would be more of a sound at a lower speed. I'm no expert here i just went through a FIEW 10 bolts so I picked up a fiew things, I had no choice. So i could be totally wrong just tring to help...

you can try changing the fluid to 85w-140. That may quite them down some. Hard launches are tough on the gears.

Thanks for the replies!

O.K. heres what I'm thinking of doing, install 4.10's and new bearings. I would not run slicks, at best D.R. I fiqure with that setup my car would be capable of 12.80ish (???). In theory, should a 10 bolt hold up or am I pushing the limits?

Well from my experience. Ten bolts are going to whine if you push them. It's the gears. They aren't thick enough to keep from getting stressed when they're beat on a bit. Another thing that doesn't help much is the megaphone built into the car a.k.a. the trans-tunnel that just kinda amplifies any sound from he rearend. I wouldn't worry too much about the gear noise as it is pretty normal. As for the 4.10's, Motive makes the quietest 4.10's I've heard for a 10 bolt, however you will still get some whine. I would also be a bit leary about putting 4.10's in another 10 bolt though especially if you have a 6 speed car, as the torque is just more then stock axles can handle without a convertor to soften the shock to the system. Right now I'm running a Moser 12-Bolt with 4.10's (Due to breaking the stock axles with 4.10's in the 10 bolt) and it whines a bit but nothing I can't drown out with the radio. There is a fine line between comfort and performance and it's a constant compromise. The more you mod your car the more noises etc... you'll notice.

Thanks.

I guess I'll start saving for a 12 bolt.

It's good to hear that I "probably" have nothing to worry about, until I do more mods
