You could attempt to do a Chevrolet 8.5" swap, but it'd take a lot of fabricating probably. A stock Ford 8.8 rear out of a Mustang is too narrow, if you could find one out of a pickup and it was wider, and then do the fabricating work, you'd have a pretty strong rear IMO. If you choose to have something made, you're going to have to find some way to get a torque arm to work with it, or switch to like SouthSide Machine Lift bars. FWIW we've never seen a GM 8.5 or Ford 8.8 rear swap, but a lot of people have kicked around the idea.
You could beef up your stock rear with a better posi, stronger axles, pinion support, and gussets on the axle tubes. Even with all that work, you're basically polishing a turd <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />
Best bet, and more or less a bolt-in, is a commercially available 12 bolt or Ford 9" from one of our sponsers.

Add chromoly control arms and panhard.. you will have gain most of that back.
