Default Put the 4.10s in today.

I finally got the 4.10s in the car today. Car feels really good, but it wines preatty good. I took the time and set them up right. Plus I get a really bad vibration around 120 on the interstate.

Who made the gears? Gears, if installed properly, should be damn near silent right after install and break-in. Remember to break them in properly- take it easy the first 100 miles, driving in very short 10 mile or less trips and letting the lube oil cool between trips. My 3.73's are just now starting to make noise after about 3,000 HARD miles on them. I'm going to take it in and get them checked out just in case.

ya you should have never gone 120... they need to go through a heat, break-in period. like stated before you should try not to drive more than 20 mins. and stay away from going over 60mph for the first 100 miles

They tell you to stay slow because as the gears break-in, they generate ALOT of extra heat- this heat breaks down the lube oil, and prevents it from doing its job. ESPECIALLY at 120!!!! I didn't catch that the first time I read your post!!!! You can run into serious (and expensive) problems by not breaking them in properly.

Who did the install?

I forgot the to everyone that the gears came out of a friends car, so they were already broke in. And they are richmond gears.

Please explain how you set them up............ what method did you use to figure pinion depth? How much backlash did you set them up with? How much preload on the carrier?

I can't remember the name of the tools. I used some marking comp, an inch pound torque wrench and the preload is 6-7 inch pounds since I have used bearings( I did check them and they were good). It had a good pattern.

Well first off, you said Richmonds. That is part of the noise issue. What weight lube are you using ??

Secondly, 6-7 inch pounds is too light. Used pinion bearings need around 12-15 "rolling" inlbs.

And last.... the vibration is shaft speed related. Try and re-clock the driveshaft in the yoke 180*. Sometime this will fix a slight vibration issue. If not you'll need to rebalance the shaft to a higher speed.

Was your vibration in 5th or 6th.... or is this an A4 ??

I will change the pre-load on the pinion. I'm running royal purple 75-90w. This is a M6 car. Thanks for the feed back.
