Default 10 bolt good enough?

Would a 10 bolt rear hold a 5psi boost from a turbo? I was just wondering because I just bought the setup and im thinkin that with the headers & bolt ons i got now, that might be a bit to much on my stock rear Do I need to pull out $2500 and get a 12 bolt?

People are gonna have this to say about this, and that about the 10 bolt. I have one, and it held up, but I wasn't purposely beating the hell out of it. Automatics are naturally "better" on them, most people dump 6's and if they hook with a sticky tire, say goodnite, cuz it'll grenade. Get a nice 9" setup for your car, should only cost you a little over 2 grand, well worth it, that's what I'm going to do. Even 5 psi with a turbo is a lot more torque than a stock motor and will shred that thing if you hook it up or plan on speed shifting with a 6.

Exactly, I still have my 10 bolt in it, thought i'd be cool and "rebuild it" with good parts and 4.10's when I didn't imagine having FI, just wanted an incredibly fast NA car on the street that was a sleeper. I ran it for a short time with the turbo until the motor came apart, and I thought to myself, there is no way in living hell this 10 bolt is gonna hang on to this much torque, no way possible... Even NA launching I would run it up to 3k, and with the ram stage 3 try to slip it best I could to progressively get the car to start rolling then let it in faster to avoid "BANG", hence only have 1.71 60' times. I would strongly recommend a 12 bolt or 9", depending on the racing and performance you plan on.

How are you taking off? I was running 1.85-1.95 60's with yokahama street tires (hard street tire) runnin 3k and slipping like I do with the et streets. Just taking off slower to try to make that old beast out back stay together? I'm guessing with a 2.0 you're either not using a 2 step/trans brake or you're going up in smoke =). Curious to hear. I've been following your setup boostaholic, you've come a long ways man since we first talked.

Well I couldn't get any traction at all last year so I was driving off the line fairly casual like (had 315 radials), this year I have some et streets on and I'm hoping to actually be able to use 1'st gear.

I replace quite a few 10 bolt rears with Moser 12 bolts and 9 inch rears. I have seen many 10 bolts over the years break even with bone stock LS1 engines on six speed F Bodies. If you have an automatic you stand a chance of the weak S10 derived rear hanging in there. Bob

yea right, I am only looking for using second gear this year. we need to get ahold of the the 750 again for another run, wasn't quite fair for us starting in third at 3000 rpm's @ 60 mph and him in second gear. but is was fun running him down though. we need to get it on video too so we can compair them.

I drove 4000 miles on a stock 10 bolt w/M6 & 725rwhp daily but didn't beat on it that hard...no hard launches. When I took it out it looked brand new. I decided to go for the 9" cause eventually the 10 bolt was going to fail. Very happy with the new 9" & true trac. If you plan on big power there's no replacement for the 12 bolt/9". You're just going to have to do it sooner or later.

I've had mine for 4 years now. Its not a track car, but I abuse it pretty good on the street with drag radials. I'll worry about replacing it when she blows.

5 years here, and nothing higher than a 2.0 60 ft

But I do beat on it hard on the street and it takes it.

6 speed 400 hp+ with drag radials.

im in the same boat.. i was looking at possibly getting a 4.10 gear, and rebuilding my stock 10 bolt and slapping in some moser axle shafts... dont know if its worth it? but it is a daily driver/ street car only... prolly see the track once in a blue moon. i have no idea what would be involved in an axle swap though... i dont have any welding/ metal fab equipment here, thats why i fear an axle swap is outta the question. and i dont wanna lose my abs er have "brake" lights lit up in my cluster.

Man, I've had this car since new 01 and GM didn't torque the pinion nut on the first rebuild! (all street) sheeesh it just got worse. with those dealer incompetents.....

You can get away with a lot of "From Roll" type racing, open track autox..etc.. But Bob is correct these ******* things are junk.

1. too small 2. **** poor quality control.

If you drag on some stickies make sure you have AAA.

I'm less drag and more open track so I built the little 7.625" and it has been fine.

Bob didn't you post in another thread that your shop has done 250k with Moser in one year. IF you are a drag racer call this guy I'm sure with that kind of deal they got with moser you won't get the leak/whine version.
