Default Help diagnosing- while in reverse, rear goes "clunk"

This only happens when I am in reverse. As I let out the clutch and start rolling backwards, every other time or so I hear a "clunk" from the rear and there is suddenly alot of drag on the drivetrain. After the clunk, the car slows down alot, and feels like there's something keeping it from moving backwards. It will still go backwards, but with an added drag of sorts.

Any idea what's going on here? Its a stock 10-bolt. Is the posi going? Some other issue?

What kind of "some other $hit" do you have. My TA did that at one point.

LCA's w/brackets, 3.73's, full intake/exhaust, prokit springs, pro 5.0. Not too much.

Sounds to me like the "gear lash" (clearance between your ring, and pinion gear) I don't know that you should hear it, as it probably depends on the car, and setup. You should def. be able to feel it tho. As it's the slop you can roll your car while it is in park.

Sorry, I don't have any slop when its in "park" I get what you're saying though. Guess I'll be taking it into the shop to have it looked at.

Aww yes lol I forgot to see you were a 6spd car. Well if you have acess to get under the car, you can check your backlash with a dial indicator if you have one, just needs to be a good mount setup, general rule of thumb backlash that we were tought in tech school was said to be between I believe it was .005" - .008" don't quote me as I don't have reference to the notes I took back then lol with me right now

could be the torsen unit going out....... mine did something similar to what you have described before it went out. That's if you are running the factory 10bolt.

Hmm, mine has been making a clicking popping type of noise when I back into my parking spot. I never have the clutch all the way out, just start to then press it back in and coast, but as I have power to it the sound is there. It's barely uphill, but that shouldn't make a difference. It doesn't do it EVERY time, but most of the time. I have 40K on the car, and nothings been touched. I hope it is the U Joint. I am tearing into the rear today to install my Motive 4.10s, hope I don't find something bad going on inside the gear case

just take a close look at the worm gears to see how sharp and defined the edges are......... mine where smoothed over once it gave up. My second one (used) is on the way out I think!!! I may give the new Detroit Locker for the 7.5 GM 10bolt a try. Just a thought.

Just to clarify, its never more than one clunk- it just happens once, then the drag is felt. Its not really a clicking or popping noise.
