When I had mine changed, it didn't take any 1000 miles for it to begin whaling.
Apparantly (to me at least), the mechanic over-torqued the pinion nut and changed the bearing pre-load.
$800 later ....
I could have gotten out for a LOT less, but I went from an Auburn to a Torsen and changed gear ratios. I quickly went back to 3.42s from 4.10s, though.
