Default Rear-End

I think the differential is going out on my car, but I'm not sure. It does some moaning and whining when I take sharp radii turns at low speed. It also seems to slip sometimes when I launch after a stop light. No problems or sounds at regular speeds (but I guess there's not huge load on it then either)...Is it normal to make some noise?

What type of differential would be stock in a '98SS? Has anyone had problems with the factory rear? And how catastrophic would it be if it does finally go out? Oh yeah...only 50k on the car...

I you have the Auburn then just change the oil and put in some Ford additive. If you have the Torsen then you need to inspect it to see if the worm gears are chipping inside.

How do I know which I have? I did the decoding and it just says that I have "limited slip diff"...I'm guessing that is the Torsen?

I have had my rear end go out twice. The first time was just a whining noise at high speeds, the second was a nasty grinding noise where is sounded like the rear end was going to fall off. As far as what might happen...I've heard that your rear wheels might stop spinning all together. I'd have it checked out as soon as possible.
