Default Gear Break-in question

ok here is the deal....
Im having gears installed in the 10 bolt along with a complete rebuild. I am familiar with the fact that gears are supposed to be broken in with special procedure. But i also have to make a 2 hour interstate drive later that afternoon (depending on time) or the following day...is that possible or is that going to be bad for the gears?

when i did mine, i had to travel 40 miles to do an errand. so i did 1/2 on the street and 1/2 highway/freeway. let it cool off often and go grab a soda or something.

baby thoes gears and bearings for 500 miles.

There is a guy on here named Element who was in a similar situation.

He had a shop 2 hrs+ from him install a gearset, and drove it home. The rear end pretty much turned to mush, the gears were ruined. It was a Superior gearset. Whether it was due to the make of the gears, the drive, or the install, I am not really sure...

Technically it does need a couple heat up/cool down sessions. You mentioned driving home the next day...is that possible? Have the shop finish the car, go for a short drive 15-20 minutes to heat up the rear end, then let the car cool completely off. Then on your way home the next day stop after 30 miles or so and have lunch, let it cool off...

WOW, talk about makin me worry more about this.....

The gears are going in Friday (tomorrow), but im not driving home till Sat. Hopefully the shop will finish early friday so i can drive around and make some short trips and cool down sessions before i drive 130 miles the next day...ill see what the guys at the shop say about driving for that long. As far as parts go I ordered Strange Gears, and its a shop that only does custom rears, so i feel confident in their work.

A couple hours at least...the housing holds a lot of heat.

make sure your pressure relief valve on top of the pumpkin is clean and loose so the air pressure can escape (which takes some hot air out).

the shops break in procedure was drive for 10miles and then let it cool down for the first 100 miles and never going above 50mph for the first 100....and then easy/normal driving for at least the next 200, and then fluid change at 500.

I already put on a lil over 100 miles doing the following procedure including a complete overnight cool down. I decided to drive sunday instead of saturday for good measure, and still plan on taking it pretty slow and stopping often. Hopefully everything will be ok. The guy at the shop said it should be fine as long as I followed the steps for the first 100miles. I have been babying the throttle, but I can still tell that the swap made a big difference. I cant wait till after 500miles and I can get on it a lil more, and realy see.

** side note: went from 2.73 to a 3.42

I recently just had 3.73 gears installed this past Friday and this is the same break in procedure I was istructed to complete and executed. Rearend Specialties installed OEM GM 3.73s along with all new internal bearing kit and there is 0% gear whine at all speeds. It was 58 miles from the shop to my driveway and did a total of 3 cool off sessions. I now have 132 miles on the new gear set.

I put 4:56 gears in a 77 chevy 4 wheel drive. And I honestly didn't know anything about this and I gave her hell as soon as I got it back from the shop. I haven't had a problem yet. Been in the moutains acouple times too. Jimmy
