Default Quick Question.. ABS reluctor ring removal.

Tried searching.. not much on removal.

I have a broken wheel stud. I have to take the axle out. THat dang reluctor ring for the ABS is in the way. Can I just tap it off w/ a brass hammer or something?

What kind of metal is it? (durability to take a hammering)

Pressed on? Shrink fit?

Advise on Axle removal? Just pop the C-clip off the axle through the rear diff, and slide it out?

The ring can just stay on. I'm confused how it is in the way? You can take that traction control sensor out, and beat the studs out through that hole. If you want to take the axle out, remove wheel & rotor, take off the rear cover, remove the 8mm bolt for the paddle, slide it out. Take the tcs sensor out, push the axle in towards the center of the car til the c-clip falls out. then slip the axle out.

It sounds like you may not have to pull the reluctor ring off from the above statement. But, if you do (I do on my 12 bolt), the ring comes off fairly easy using a big crow bar and lightly prying up on it all the way around the axle a tiny bit a t a time. They will need to be pressed back on though.

I took a look at it the other day. There is no room w/ the e-brake assy and the reluctor ring. The ring is blockign the back of the lug stud, just enough to keep it from comming out w/o dinging up the ring.

edit: Yeah I know I brought this back from the dead but that's what the search feature brought up!

I just used a pry bar and went around the ring tapping the pry bar with a hammer to get the ring off.

But they don't have to be pressed on though; I soaked the outer end of the axle in a bucket with a few inches of ice water for 10-15 minutes and at the same time soaked the ring in hot water and then I gently tapped it right back on.

are you sure u have to remove the abs ring to replace a wheel stud? if its broken that should make it real easy to remove and you should be able to slip the new one in there.

Is there a difference in the LT1 and LS1 cars with the ABS ring, because it looks like some people on here are able to do this without taking the axle out.
