What is a drive shaft made of?
Pretty much what the subject says: What is a Driveshaft made of on a 2000 Z28? Mine is rusted and I thought they were made of aluminum!?

Some were made of steel and some were made of aluminum. I believe the determining factor is your rear end ratio. 2000 f-bodies came with 3 different rear end ratios:
2.73 - standard A4
3.23 - optional in A4's, standard on SS's and WS6's
3.42 - standard on all M6's
If yours is rusting, I assume you have an A4 with a 2.73 rear end.

So how bad are 2.73 gears compared to the 3.23 race wise
Yep I just checked and looks like I have the 2.73 gears... So how bad are 2.73 gears compared to the 3.23 race wise?

See sig..
The 98 Formula has 2.73's... It holds its own..
They are more fun at high speeds..
The rear end has 19,900 miles on it, rebuilt with a used stock posi. The posi has around 50,000 miles on it. I broke the original posi racing this past weekend, but the gears are still intact.
Just a thought, if you're thinking about changing gear ratios in the future.

Actually, I believe the determining factor is which tires the car comes with (although this usually goes along with whether the car has the "performance" ratio rearend with an A4 since few would pick that option but not spring for the Z rated tires.) If the car is optioned with the non-Z rated tires (and the 115 MPH speed limiter that goes along with it) it will have a steel shaft. An M6 (of which all have 3.42 gears) that comes with non-speed rated tires will have a steel shaft, for example.

RSAs are Z rated. they arent "performance" though.
i had chromes with 2.73, and RSAs and TC. weird combo. my DS is rusted as well, i didnt even know it wasnt alum till i looked at it one day 2.73s were more fun on the expressway though, im not really sure why. prolly cause you can run 2nd gear till a higher rpm
