Default Drivetrain question

Why Are ford 9"s so damn expensive?

Ok I obvioulsy want to upgrade my 10 bolt 3.42 posi

To a 9" ford Posi ( unknown gearing) (EIther 3.55, 3.89 or 4.11) However why do I need to upgrade to a Ford 9"?

if my 10 bolt which is 7.5" is holding up to a catback and lid.. if my future mods that include LTs a mild cam and a tune... wont a 8.2" be good enough? and why cant I just upgrade the ring and pinion gear... why does the whole axle assembly need to be replaced?

also Once and for all for a daily driver with mild cam, full boltons and a couple of other mods ( no more than 450 RWHP ) and I take it to the dragstrip 10 times a year (say roughly 50 - 75 runs a year) what would be a good driveshaft?

Why not an upgraded aluminum one? why do so many people suggest chromemoly or steel

and lastly how close is the weight difference between chromemoly and aluminum?

Why Are ford 9"s so damn expensive? The Moser 12 bolt and the Moser 9 inch are actually really close in price.

To a 9" ford Posi ( unknown gearing) (EIther 3.55, 3.89 or 4.11) However why do I need to upgrade to a Ford 9"? The oem rear-end that is in the f body cars was originally used in the Chevy Monza and the S-10 mini pick-up truck. It is a tiny rear that can't handle much power. The 9 inch rear is even stronger than the 12 bolt, and with the prices being about the same, I suggest going with the 9 inch.

if my 10 bolt which is 7.5" is holding up to a catback and lid.. if my future mods that include LTs a mild cam and a tune... wont a 8.2" be good enough? and why cant I just upgrade the ring and pinion gear... why does the whole axle assembly need to be replaced? There physically is no way to put a larger diameter ring and pinion in the small 7.5" housing. The rear is just too small and dinky. Many people have put $600 to $700 into the stock 10 bolt to try to get them to last, only to have the next undersized part fail. Everything about the rear is too small. It would be like trying to use the rear from an MG behind a V8, the whole thing is too small.

also Once and for all for a daily driver with mild cam, full boltons and a couple of other mods ( no more than 450 RWHP ) and I take it to the dragstrip 10 times a year (say roughly 50 - 75 runs a year) what would be a good driveshaft? The PST driveshaft that I sell is what I recommend. It is an aluminum 3.5" diameter driveshaft that is rated for 1200 hp. It is equipped with both U Joints and the front yoke. It will bolt right up to either a Moser 12 bolt of the Moser 9 inch, or any other rear that has the larger 1350 yoke.

and lastly how close is the weight difference between chromemoly and aluminum? Very close in weight. Bob

You can get by for a long time on the stock unit as long as you don't run sticky tires. But then again, you want to drag race and for your power level, you'll need sticky tires to get traction. That's why you need a better rear end. Leave your car alone and it will do fine--but what fun is that? Such is life.
