Default 9" vs 12 Bolt

Hey guys i am planning on upgrading my rear end but i dunno what to do. I have full exhaust now, and minor intake mods. Before i got to putting in a cam or anythin i wanted to grab a strong rear first. I was really planning on doing just gears in my stock rear but i have a 2-series and from what im reading, do it once and do it right. Im gonna save up my money for a 12 bolt or a 9" i just dont know what to get. can u guys help me out?

Keep in mind im in college so money is crucial which is why im thinking about the 12 bolt. Also keep in mind after this ill be workin on the suspension, a bigger cam (lifters, valve springs, rockers), and possibly a high stall converter after the new rear end.

sorry its a lot to read but thanks in advance for any input.

I sell the Moser 9 inch for $2,400.00 shipped. This is with the nodular center with a Truetrac posi, your choice of gear ratio, and 31 spline axles. Add ABS/TCS for an added $100.00. This rear will handle a lot of abuse, and comes equipped with the torque arm mount. Bob

I just did a 9" install and it nickel and dimed me to the end. You being an A4 car I think a 12 bolt would be perfect.

There is alot of fab work to make a 9" fit under the car correctly. Expect to use the stock Torque arm unless beating the tranny tunnel is OK with you. You have to fab something to make the swaybar functional again or pay anywhere from $32 to $80 for a prefab package.

Just alot of little things that add up in the end. The 12 bolt install may be the same story. Just some food for thought.

You have to fab a spacer or bracket for the center swaybar bushing mounts to get the swaybar away from the housing and the large tubes that the torque arm mount bolts to on the housing.

I used some 3" leaf spring U-bolts w/ muffler clamp bottom and had 1" square tubing welded to the clamp bottom. Bought some new swaybar bushing brackets with a grease fitting and slotted mounting holes to allow for the 3" clamp. I also had to purchase longer swaybar endlinks. Autozone stocks all the swaybar brackets and endlinks. Just have to see how much endlink length your application needs.

if money is an issue, your cheapest option is getting a moser housing/axle/tq arm kit, and piecing the rest together yourself....

We use the 3" exhaust U bolts from Napa, and reuse the original bottom part of the sway bar clamp. The holes in the oem parts have to be slightly oblonged to get the wider U bolts to fit through. This procedure works out very well for us.

We don't normally have many problems with aftermarket torque arms fitting with the Moser 9 inch. I know with the Spohn 405 torque arm we use a pry bar against the torque arm towards the front of it to gain a little clearance in the tunnel. It takes all of a minute to do this. Bob

The Strange 12 bolt (what I run in an M6 car) was a 100% bolt in differential. Everything needed for install was provided by Strange minus oil.

build your own 9in and save yourself some money. I went to pull-a-part and got a 9in out of a truck. I cut it down and ordered a locker from ARB, gears are motives, and axles are moser. I have this under the impala taht i was driving awile back.

99% of people aren't going to need more than a 12bolt.

personnaly dig into the motor first or even suspension and leave the rear end for last.
for the kinda money your gonna drop on that rear you can do a HC or all the bolt ons and lower the car and do sway bars.
you should be able to get a 12 bolt installed for $2200-$2300 tops.

Problem with that is, 400rwhp engine + sticky tires + hard launch = explosion.

I was seriously debating whether or not to do a H/C package first (although just the heads alone will be the price of a 12 bolt), but decided that with the car as it is now - 10 bolt and 245s - I can't even get a good launch, and it would be pointless to have a 440rwhp car and not even be able to go WOT under 50mph without just spinning. Wider tires would fix that, but traction and a hard M6 launch are two things that i don't think would mix well with the stock 10 bolt.

Yea 6-speed cars definitely need a 9". And you are gonna need more than wider tires to get that thing to hook. SFC, LCA, TA, PHR, Wolfe anti-roll bar, QA1's......that is what you really need.
