Default FORD 9"

Has anyone here built their own 9" rear from an old ford rear end (rather than buying one from mosier or strange)?

If so, what kind of work is involved and how much money was spent on the build... was it worth it to fab one up yourself?

I built one out of a 60 lincoln. I did it when i was in tech school so i had alot of help from instructors. By the time i was done i had it bolted in to a 3rd gen firebird. Never ran it though. I sold it with my old Formula. I would never think about doing it by yourself. It was a bitch at school with every tool you could imagine, even at that i never ran it in my own car. I actually have a moser 9 inch for sale if your interested

It would be a pain in the @ss... You'd have to remove all your suspension mounts (LCA's, Shocks, spring perches) and weld them to the 9" housing with the correct geometry/measurements... Then you'd have to fab up a torque arm mount, simply because ford never used a torque arm suspension...
It probably be less of a headache ordering one already setup. I saved quite a bit off Moser's price by Having Scott @ driveline solutions set me up. Basically Moser will be shipping me the housing and axles, while he will be shipping me a strange pro nodular center section with the spool and gears already installed/setup. Some minor assembly and there's nothing more to worry about. DLS is a sponsor, and has great prices... Check him out --------->

have you done it? or were you just joking lol...

i want to know the answer to this question too. if it can be done on a 4th gen i would try it. but most people say in the long run its easier and cheaper to buy one. even if you do it, it may be a noisy one and cause suspension problems.

That guy is either messing around or has never done it before. In theory it seems easy. But just think of every aspect. Suspension mounts, pinion angle, torque arm mounting, not warping the housing while welding. And many other aspects.

Im being sarcastic.... Although I do work with rear end housings on a daily basis.. I know what a pain in the *** it is to correct them.. after you have welded on them or they have seen wall contact at 180 ... Its just frustrating because people dont listen or bother to read the FAQ or do a search..Theres only 2 ways to do something right or wrong... without proper tools and experence it is deffently wrong..

true...but even if you rigged one to work it would be more trouble than its worth. might as well pay for one.

moser lists there housing by itself for 610 bucks 985 with the axles. for 610 bucks its not worth it to even try, if you get a standard used ford rear for around 100 bucks you will have to replace the ends for the right brakes your looking at around 100 bucks there, you need to make up mounts for the torque arm and the lower control arms, you need spring mounts, its not worth it, just buy the housing from moser and work with that, its a lot cheeper, I hand built a lot of stuff on my car and this is one thing I didnt even want to bother with

You would either have to completely butcher your current rear or buy a donor rear for bracketry and housing ends.
Then you would have to make your housing ends fit, or use an aftermarket brake set up(or use the drums that would most likely come with the 9" you buy).
After that you would have to weld everything perfectly aligned and true, which to be done properly would require a solid rear end jig/stand.
Rent, unless you own a welder.
Measure, re-measure, and fine material to build a solid torque arm mount.
Then its time to buy custom axles, bearing and master kit, gears, a good 3rd member, a good pinion bearing support, a decent aftermarket diff, a yoke, miscelaneous bolts, some paint(jk, although you do need it). Add all that to your donor rear, junk yard 9" rear, and other materials (to fab you torque arm mount) and add in your time.
How much are you saving?
You could scrounge for decent factory parts (that are 40 years old) to save some cash, but they arent nearly as strong as the aftermarket parts. To build it with the parts you would get with a complete bolt in rear might save you a couple hundred dollars, but then you have much more time invested.
I would consider building my own since I have done custom rears before and have access to parts at really good prices and also already own a welder, but I would use the deal I could get on an already built rear.

if you can get in with someone and get cost on one of these you can build them cheep. I built my complete rear with all new parts for 1900 bucks, thats all top notch parts, moser rear narrowed 4 inches with the rear brace welded on thats an extra 113 bucks that you dont need, moser nodular case, moser HD pinion support, moser 35 spline axles moser spool, moser yoke, richmond gears, all the bearings, solid pinion spacer all the seals, moroso 1350 U joint gurdle, that price I paid is everything paint royal purple oil. you just have to get in with someone to get a good price.
