FORD 9"
If so, what kind of work is involved and how much money was spent on the build... was it worth it to fab one up yourself?
It probably be less of a headache ordering one already setup. I saved quite a bit off Moser's price by Having Scott @ driveline solutions set me up. Basically Moser will be shipping me the housing and axles, while he will be shipping me a strange pro nodular center section with the spool and gears already installed/setup. Some minor assembly and there's nothing more to worry about. DLS is a sponsor, and has great prices... Check him out --------->
have you done it? or were you just joking lol...
i want to know the answer to this question too. if it can be done on a 4th gen i would try it. but most people say in the long run its easier and cheaper to buy one. even if you do it, it may be a noisy one and cause suspension problems.

Then you would have to make your housing ends fit, or use an aftermarket brake set up(or use the drums that would most likely come with the 9" you buy).
After that you would have to weld everything perfectly aligned and true, which to be done properly would require a solid rear end jig/stand.
Rent, unless you own a welder.
Measure, re-measure, and fine material to build a solid torque arm mount.
Then its time to buy custom axles, bearing and master kit, gears, a good 3rd member, a good pinion bearing support, a decent aftermarket diff, a yoke, miscelaneous bolts, some paint(jk, although you do need it). Add all that to your donor rear, junk yard 9" rear, and other materials (to fab you torque arm mount) and add in your time.
How much are you saving?
You could scrounge for decent factory parts (that are 40 years old) to save some cash, but they arent nearly as strong as the aftermarket parts. To build it with the parts you would get with a complete bolt in rear might save you a couple hundred dollars, but then you have much more time invested.
I would consider building my own since I have done custom rears before and have access to parts at really good prices and also already own a welder, but I would use the deal I could get on an already built rear.
