Default Rearend shortening question!

Ok this should be my last question. I am going with a for 9inch. And I would like to shorten it by 4inches. That way I can run a deeper wheel. Now shortening, will that effect the lower control arms and the shock mounts. Is there any problems that I will have by shortening it that much?

I don`t think you can shorten it that much without having to minitub the car

Ya you can. All I would have to get different back spacing on the wheels.

I think 2" on each side (4" total) is about the max you can go before running into problems. I researched this a while back, and that's about all I came up with.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of narrowing it?
Why narrow it 4" per side and then get wheels with 2" less backspace?
It's the same as keeping the wheels you have and narrowing it 2" per side or just getting wheels with 4" more backspace and not narrowing it at all.

No, I am talking about 4 inches total. 2inch on each side. You can't just run a smaller backspacing to get a deeper dish because it will rub. That is why I want to narrow the rearend to get the deeper dish, and still have the tire sit in the same location.

Why do you want the deeper dish? Just for looks? If you are not mini-tubbing you wont realy be able to fit any more tire than you can already. Unless you are just planning for the future. I know the wheels with less backspace are less prone to warping and such from the weight being centered, is that the reason?

He's probably trying to save some weight, as well as tuck the more readily available drag wheels without the need for a mini-tub.

The wheels are a big factor I guess, 5.5" BS is a lot more common than 7.5. I think if I already had a set I liked I wouldnt bother though. Plus you would need spacers to mount your all weather tires or stock wheels if you had them. Sounds more like a track oriented car though, so that probably isnt an issue.

I will be running 2 sets of prostars. One for the street and on for the track. I am thinking about going this route simply for appearence reasons.

Exactly why I am doing it. I think a 10 inch wide rim with 5.5 BS looks much better than one with 7.5 BS.
I run a pro star with a 5.5 BS now I just want them to tuck in better and since I have to order a 12 bolt anyway........might as well order it shortened.

I thought I replyed to post like this before on this board but I couldnt find it when I looked back, so ill re post what I found out while doing mine.

you can narrow it 4 inches (2 a side) it fits fine and lets you run 15x10 with 5 inch back spacing when doing mine I found out that you have to remove the damper from the brakes to clear and if you run relocation brackets I had to cut mine out and weld peices back in to clear the e-brake cable. heres a couple of pics

What all did you have to do after it was narrowed the 5ich. Did you have to cut or remove anything?

after I did mine I was glad I didnt go much more the brake lines are already flexed at just about there max any more and you would have to make customs lines, and if I went any more on mine I couldnt have used relocation brackets, the left side brake bleader is really close to my panhard bar mount allready, to thats just my opinion, I have 15x10s 5 inch back space on mine with 26 11.5 15 and they sit flush with the top edge of the fender.

I cut out the bumpstops but I could of left them. I bought the wheels and rearend from sjm. The brake line does have to bend alot to fit but I have strange drag brakes.

I dont know if you can go 2.5 a side with stock brakes, the bleaders get to close to the panhard mount. at least from what I seen doing mine it looks like it would, I have a LT1 car so maybe LS1s are a little diffrent, something id be interested in knowing.
