snapped main bolt

Default snapped main bolt

what would cause a main bolt to sheer in half. i was slowing down to a toll booth.. doing like 10 mph and BOOM anyways the bolt was too big to make it to the ring and pinion side... just confused on how this all happened.. bent axles?? time???

What main bolt? The pinion nut came off, lug nut, or what I'm lost on what your saying.

the four bolt main now only has 3 bolts... a grade 8 bolt snapped in half.. how does this happen.. first pic is of cover... second is where the bolt came from.. its supposed to be inbetween the #'s in the hole.. third is the bolt.. side angle.. sorry about the pic quality they are camera phone

Has any work ever been done to it, Gear change? It's possible that it was over torqued, or that it had a manufaturing defect.

rear end was not touched in the last year and a half that i owned it... do you think that bent axles could have done that.. i have bad tire wear also.. the inside of my rear tires are wearing faster than the outside by like a 1/8 of and inch

my car did the same exact thing when i had the stock 10 bolt in it. i made a hard 3 gear pass and when i was coasting down i heard a loud bang and nasty noise form the rear. slowed down and stopped and saw the trail of gear lube. limpedi t the 2 blocks home and pulled the cover. i snapped 2 of the same bolt though not just one. my cover looked identical. axles were peferctly straight. my guess is i just put too much torsional force on the differential itself and it twisted enough to break those bolts.

yeah i dont know.. i mean i was on the highway for about 30 miles and in that 30 miles i didnt beat on it.. yeah i took her up to 135 but it was like a 4th gear pull not bangin gears.. i was just cruisin for a while came up to the toll booth and BOOM..

what makes me more upset is that i drove her normal 2 days prior to going to the track.. didnt open her up once...

damn thats nasty.. prolly would have been like that had i not been going 10 mph any suggestions on rear ends for the winter project???

Check the other bolts to see if any were loose. My guess is that it backed out enough to get snapped off with the rotating force of the rear end. I just blew up the gears in my carrier and was going to take it apart. All 4 bolts holding carrier together were border line loose/ slightly snug.
