Default Re-shimming backlash ?

Guys, I just had Superior 3.73s installed and after about 300 mile break-in period and 4 complete heat cycles I could not help doing some little highway punches. Of course the gears started immediately whining.

I pulled the cover and by eye ( I didn't measure ) it looked to me that the backlash was more that the .010. There was very visible movement and a clunk between p & r. I put in Valvoline 85W140 and it's OK. I'm just afraid that it won't be too long.

The installer did claim that the oil would not even need to be replaced after break-in period...

Anyway, is there any use trying to shim the backlash at this point or is it gonna be new gears soon ? It's been driven about 400 miles.

Pekka

I have mine at .010" too. I was told by Cartek that alittle extra backlash helps with cushioning the shock of the drivetrain and prolongs the life of the gear.

Yes, I would like it to be .010. I'm just afraid it's more. I will try measure and shim it myself in case it can be succesfully done at this point.

Interesting....I was wondering the same thing. I have Richmond 3.73s and after the install I noticed a slight whine, not too bad. After a few launches at the track on ET Streets they got noticably louder, borderline annoying

I installed a set of Richmond 3.42 with a solid crush sleeve. After about 2500 miles the pinion bearings were slightly loose. I pulled out the solid sleeve and put a new crush sleeve in. I torqued it to a certain amount of drag torque and drove it. It too started quiet and grew whiny. More so on deceleration. In the morning, I am going to inspect the pinion bearings again to see if they any looser. I was also told that Richmond gear sets are noisy, but stronger that most 10-bolt gears. I have yet to launch off the line with drag radials and 150HP shot at 5K. I'll find out tomorrow.

Every set Ive had have been quiet til I start banging gears( M6).Than they all whine . Genuine GM, gm motive, ive heard of more people breaking richmonds than any other gear. Ive had mine set at 8 thou, 10thou, and my last set 3 days ago at 12 thou. They all whine. But im real hard on them !!I replaced the gm motive 3 days ago cause they really sounded bad. Only had like 2k and maybe 40 passes on them. When they came out they looked fine. We checked the lash before removal, and it was still at 10 thou. like it had been installed!!I dont have a rear end girdle and wonder if im flexing the whole housing?? The original 3.42s wre very quiet for 46k and hundreds and hundreds of passes!

What gear ratio are you using? I have 3.42 and other have said they less prone to breakage than a 3.73 or 4.10. I also have ARP main bearing cap stud kit and a Summit rearend Girdle. I figure to atleast have something to reduce flex.

The factory installed 3.42s are strong as hell. But, the 3.73s are a nice mod!!

If they were quiet after the install no bearings failed then I don't see how the backlash changed. Maybe the pinion nut backed out? Installer might have forgotten lock tite. I'm just guessing here. Check for pinion fore-aft movement. I don't think shims would do anything. After all it was quiet after the install so they are correct. I'm guessing it's the pinion moving.

I've been beating on my 4.10s like there is no tomorrow. They dare to whine I'll kill them.
