that you can't change out just the differential & it's internals on a 98 Trans Am, or something like that? can anyone clarify this up?

thanks

You can change the differential, gearset, bearings etc... Same with any other rear end. I'm wondering if you might be confused. On the LS1 F-cars it's not typically worth the money to play with the stock 10-bolt rear as they have a reputation for grenading under pressure. The housings are prone to flex, the ring gear is small, etc. Especially M6 cars. Maybe that's wat they were talking about.

so the best thing to do is find a complete rear end than to try and change out those little parts?

Usually yes.

Typically you can find a used rear end for somewhere between $300-600.

New Gears typically run $200 and then you have to pay for all the seals, races, etc, which is another $100-200.

This means you are already into it for $300-400 prior to paying for the labor of installing it all which can range form $200 to $600.

Yea a 12 Bolt, 9 inch, or Dana 60 are the 3 upgrades for the 10 bolt, most people can get by with the 12 bolt, even those running a good bit of power have trouble breakinga 12 bolt. 9 inchers and 60's are big, beefy, heavy units and they can take a beating.
