Default Cheese with that gear whine?

About a week or so ago i noticed some increased whine coming from the back of my car. It used to be that i would get whine while cruising in 5th or 6th gear. Now i get it in 3rd and 4th gear as well. It doesn't get any louder if i accelerate hard, and stops as soon as my car stops. My car doesn't drive any differently. Any thoughts on what it could be. Bearings maybe? Could it really be anything serious?

I'm having the same problem... I need to changed the diff fluid tho. Give that a shot if you haven't changed it lately. When you're in there look for strange wear patterns on the gears. If you don't see anything there, its probably the bearings.

Anyone have a link to a how-to on bearing replacement? I think I'll be doing this shortly

Yeah, had my fluid changed about a year ago so i don't think that is the problem. Wish it was though cause it would be an easy fix

Try a heavier fluid.

Unfortunately, usually gear lube change is hardly ever the answer. If you've been driving the car hard--which is supposedly what they're made for, the pinion bearing, or carrier bearings could be going south....Also check gear clearances. They do change under excessive use. (ring & pinion). Best of luck. WJ.

Well i don't drive the car like my grandma would, but i don't exactly do 8 grand holeshots in it either. When its not whining i'm noticing a nice clunking noise coming from it. Gonna get the car checked out monday. Why do i have a feeling that this is gonna cost me?

One of the techs at work was nice enough to check it out for me. We got it up on the lift and he and a few other techs listened with the stethascope. They all agreed that it is the pinion bearings. The whine from the bearings is resonating up the aluminum driveshaft and making it compete with my exhaust noise-wise. I guess they see this problem on Jeep Wranglers all the time. Good thing i can get parts at wholesale and know a guy who hopefully will not charge me the full hourly rate to fix it. Still sucks cause i'll be without my car for a few days, but oh well.

Default Opinions Please (long)

OK, about a month ago my rear end started whining really loud. Took it to a guy i know and he replaced both pinion bearings in it. He said that there was a lot of shrapnel that floated around in there from the bearings, he said that it might have damaged some things in there. He said that we wouldn't know for sure until the fluid got nice and hot in there. So i drove it around a lot for a day, and no problems. He said if there was gonna be a problem that it would have happened by then, its fine. So everything is all good until a couple days ago. Notice that there is a slight whine now coming from the back. Its more noticable at some times then others, but its definately there, and i don't think i noticed it before. Now on a perhaps unrelated topic, my car will not go into reverse without some big time effort. Happened all of the sudden last night, shifter just wouldn't go into reverse without pushing really hard. All the other gears are fine. At the same time this happened, my check engine light comes on. Two codes. One saying that the MAF input is lower than expected for the current engine operating conditions (PO803). The other saying that there is a malfunction in my skip shift solenoid (PO102).
I don't know if any of this is related to anything. Or if its just all coincidence. Needless to say, yesterday was not one of the better days in the life of my car. Anyways i apologize for the length of this post, but if anyone has any input about what is going on here, it is much appreciated. Because right now all I feel like doing is
