Default 14 bolt?

I tried searching but it wasn't working for me, however, I am wondering why the GM 14 bolt is never discussed as a GM alternative to the 10 and 12 bolt rears. I am sort of a noob at rearends but as far as I understand the 10 bolt is weaker because it is smaller.

I know that my 1991 DD pickup came with a 10 bolt, but the way more powerful 1991 454SS trucks came with 14 bolt rears. I guess am just wondering the reason why nobody uses the 14 bolt rear?

Hmmmm, I figured they would be heavier than the 10 bolt, how much heavier are they than a 9 inch?

its a 1 ton truck rearend! its used in monster trucks!! either a 9.5" or 10.5" ring gear! it probably wouldnt fit under an f-body!

9.5 14 bolt used in 3/4 ton trucks
10.5 14 bolt 1 ton trucks
and the huge 11.5 14 bolt used in 1 ton but try and find a locker for that
trailblazer ss use the 9.5 14 bolt with a eaton lsd

weight no....but they do have a 9.5 axle that is only 2 mm longer

Ever thought about ground clearance?
Those tire are 31 inches tall and thats a 1 ton 10.5 14 bolt. All the brake parts weigh close to 250 pounds, the axle hubs go through the wheel and are about 4" around.
The 9.5 14 bolt is somewhat smaller but still heavy as hell.

Consider the initial purchase price, narrowing it, finding car wheels for it....forget it YOU WILL NEVER SEE A 14 BOLT GM REAR IN A STREET/ STRIP F-BODY. You might see an f-body in a trailer park on top of a truck chassis with a 14 bolt.
