what to set backlash at?

what to set backlash at? I just had a set of 4.10's put in and the spec said to set the backlash at .008-.010 and he got mine at .009 and they are loud!! what are you guy setting them at? I was told by a friend they need to be around .014
.014 is way too much. If they are a 2 cut gear (AAM,OE) they can be set as tight as .005 if you get the right pattern. .009 should be close, but a lot of that hinges on if your pinion depth is right.
well...is this a stock 10 bolt? 12bolt?, what kinda gears...theyre all different.
we did some 12 bolt gears this weekend, and it called for .005-.010". the 10 bolt gears called for .008-.013" i think....dont quote me on that.
my buddy ended up .010" backlash and his are fine.

The rule of thumb for 5 cut gears (most aftermarket) is .008-.012". If you are at .009 and have a lot of noise than you depth is probably wrong or your preload is probably off.

I agree. Probably bad pinion depth or side to side movement of the diff. Did the installer test the runout on the ring gear? Whenever you bring the ring gear bolts out of their holes, they'll sometimes bring up the edge of the hole, thereby not allowing the ring gear to fully rest against the ring gear plate on the diff. I had a loud gearset, checked the runout, cleaned the tops of the holes gently with a file, and tried again. No noise.
