Replacing a bearing, what oil to use?

Replacing a bearing, what oil to use?
I looked at the rear-end FAQ and is suggests useing 75w90 or 80w90 and might need a additive depending on if you have a auburn carrier. Is the Carrier a factory option or this aftermarket? Gonna take the car on a short trip after I replace the bearing (providing there are no leaks) and last thing I want is to be stranded 200 miles away from home with no tools to fix a problem.
The Oil able to be picked up at any local auto store? Went to the dealership and asked them and the guy gave me a blank look like a deer looks at a oncoming semi.
Thanks!

There are varying opinions on whether to use the GM limited slip additive or not to use it. Some say like you mentioned that it is only needed for the Auburn differential. When I changed the gear oil in my SS I used Mobil 1 Synthetic 75W90 (2 quarts needed) with the GM additive.
It's cheap insurance when you hear about people experiencing whinning coming from the rearend when not including it. Just go back to the dealer and tell them you need the little bottle of the GM limited slip additive it comes in a 4 oz bottle (GM PN 1052358). I believe when I bought a bottle it was under 5 dollars. Cheap insurance if you ask me. You can read more about it if you use search for limited slip additive.

If you use the limited slip additive will not hurt anything even if your car does not require it. I have always put the additive even in peg legged rear ends. It is inexpensive and cheap insurance.
