Default fast oil change

i changed my gear oil today by using my TA cover drain/fill holes, and i think i have never done an oil change on anything as fast as i did today.

even the drain plug didnt leak afterwards, never heard of needing a sealant on them anyways.

after 3 1/2 months my oil was burnt and pretty dam black. i dont know why, may just be from being a DD. i put 1 and a half quarts in, and the LSD additive and it was full.

Got to agree, my Summit Racing Ali cover has a drain plug and fill hole. Although I find it easier to fill from the original hole as there is more room. Can't beat the drain plug a lot less messy than taking the cover off and oil going everywhere.

I changed my oil about three months ago and recently I took the rear end cover off to try and fit my 3.73 Richmonds gears I had left over from my last car a 95 Z28.

My oil was a bit discloured already which suprised me as I do only 4,000 miles a year. When I changed the oil 3 months ago the car had 80,000 miles on and it was the first time the cover has been off. The oil didn't look to bad for 80k miles and 7 years of use! Oh and the most important bit no metal shavings or any kind of debri in there, indicating everything is fine with my axle with 80k miles on it!

I also put the GM limited slip addative in there because I could not get Synthetic gear oil in the UK. I contacted the GM dealer and they told me mineral gear oil is fine as long as I used the addative.

Mineral based gear oil (with the GM additive) is the ONLY one to use if you have an Auburn diff, which I thought was the case with ALL stock '98-'99 f body 10 bolts. But others on here disagree with this and claim that the '99s started the Torsen T2 diff use. Who knows??

Mine is a 99 and has a Zexel Torsen and the handbook says fully sysnthetic gear oil for the axle. I couldn't find anyone in the UK that stocked fully synthetic gear oil so I rang the UK GM dealer to see if they could get me some from the USA and they said when they service cars they use mineral gear oil with the addative and that will be ok!

I find it hard to believe that you cannot get Silkolene/Fuchs, Motul or Elf synthetic gear oils in the UK!!! But in any case, yes, you are still fine with mineral based oil in a Torsen (some on here will say that you are still better off with the mineral stuff even in a T2!).

Maybe the "import" cars got the T2 a year ahead of us yanks??

Yes I should have said my car is a European Import model that originally went through Belgium to Germany and then found it's way to the UK about 3 years ago.

My RPO codes and there are a lot of them for a European car took a lot of decyfering.

There are a lot of differences to the USA model lights ,bumpers for the long European style number plates, rear fog light set in the bumper, radio frequencies are different so stereo is different, exhaust I had a single tail pipe on a V8? RPO codes listed a quietness pack I guess our noise laws for exhaust are stricter than yours! You guys knock the Flowmaster but at least my car sounds like a V8 now, you couldn't tell with my stock exhaust!

As ar as the synthentic gear oil goes I rang everyone in the yellow pages and all I could get was a semi synthetic. There is no call for sysnthetic axle oil here as no cars use it yet. That's why I called the main UK GM import dealer for advice.

Anyway my Torsen rear sounded nice and quiet when I did the oil change so all is well!
