What gears do I need?
What gears do I need? I have an a4 car with heads and a cam that pulls up to 7000. I also have a tci ss3500 converter. What gears do I need to be running to help me the most. I have 3:23 in it right now and I doesn't launch as hard as I would like. I have the stock 10 bolt, so i am deffinatly expecting it to blow up fairley soon. I have heard two things about lower gear ratios: 1. Since it is a smaller gear it will be prone to breaking easier. 2. Lower gear ratios in a stalled car does not help....................Give me some advice and also correct the two statements that I have heard if they are wrong.

i hear 3.73's are the gear to run with an Auto. If its pulling up to 7000 have you found out what you are going through the traps with now. I have 5.13's in my 69 using a T-400 trans, as you know a turbo 400 has three speeds and third gear is a 1:1 ratio, i go through the traps at about 7400RPM's at around 133-135mph with a 33" tall tire. Our engine builder reccomended the gears as thats where my engine is making peak HP. You have overdrive so right there that negates using such a high gear. In my street car, my 2002 Manual camaro I run 4.10's and that gets me through teh traps at around 6000 - 6200 if i remember correctly - hope this helps a bit
