Default Impact Gun or breaker bar on Pinion Nut???

When you set up your rear end did you use a breaker bar or a impact gun to set preload?

I hear an impact gun is how you do it.

I also hear that an impact gun will damage the pinion bearing races resulting in gear whine....

any insight would be apreciated as I am going to try and set up yeat another rear end in attempt to get my car to not whine with my motive 4.11's

I've done both, the impact gun is easier. To avoid damage to the bearings you need to hold it from banging around.
It's very difficult to get the preload set perfect though. A short turn with a breaker is best to set it.
So my vote is be lucky or use both.

Edit: this is if the rear is in the car, if the rear is out use a breaker bar.

I usually take the slack out with the impact and set up the final preload with a breaker bar.

this rear will be out of the car, im just curious how to use a breaker bar on it whan its out...

when its in the car I can see sticking a prybar through one of the U-jont channels and letting the prybar rest agienst the floor of the car as I torque down the nut with the prybar

Im wondering how to use a prybar while its on the bench.... i wonder if i can do the same by just holding it in my hand?

Use, borrow. or rent a big pipe wrench to hold the yoke.
Someone might post and say they know how to build a nice little tool that bolts to it to hold it, but chances are you can get a pipe wrench quicker, easier, and works just as well.
You can even use a 12" adjustable wrench on one side of the yoke.
