Default Detroit locker...

...anybody run it in their everyday driver? I am considering getting one, but I drive my car everyday. Wondering how bad the noise will be with 3.73's in it, and how streetable a locker is. Any input would be appreciated.

I have a locker in my Moser 9" and it's really not that bad after you get used to the way it drives. The noise isn't bad at all to me. The only noise I get is when the locker locks up after a sharp turn. The part that took the most getting used to was the way it drives as far as when it locks and unlocks. When you straighten up from a turn or changing lanes it relocks and gives a little bump and the car moves left or right a little bit. After driving it for a week or so I knew what to expect and I don't even notice it anymore.
I do like the fact of knowing no matter how hard I lauch it aint gonna break, like a posi can.

my detroit locker is the exact same way.

BTW..you said 3.73s...detroit lockers are only available for 9"s I thought which limits you to a 3.70 gear

You are right...3.70's I got stuck on the GM train of thought.

This is a car I drive everyday...60+ miles round trip for work. Drag racing is just something I do on the weekends with the car currently, would a POSI unit be a better idea since this isn't just a track car?

yep, same exp here in my 56 ford truck. The noise isn't a concern. it isn't a load noice but a noise that people outside kind hear, "click, click, click" as you are turning. But it isn't loud at all. The only problem I had was that I wore out my tires fairly fast. At 9 months the tires would be almost bald and by a year they would be showing kevlar. these were BFG radial T/A's, BTW. But knowing that the posi won't go out due to normal wear and tear is great. I drove my truck everyday (daily driver) for 8 years.

I've had my 9" with 4.57's and a locker for about 950 miles now. I stopped noticing the click after about the first 3 miles. I love it and have no regrets... I've seen too many posi's go to pieces behind M6 cars...

So I should expect tires not to last me that long? That isn't good...I put about 20k miles a year on my car. I don't want to replace my tires every 6 months!

I have a locker and 3.70's, it isn't bad when you get used to it, it just jerks to the left when it locks and to the right when it unlocks. The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to kinda take turns slow instead of whipping around them, but I guess that what you sacrifice for the strength!

Nascar uses them in there cars (required) on oval and road race courses, so they will definitely work and are nearly impossible to break. Got a 69 Chevy with a twin turbo 496 with over 350,000 miles with no troubles (a few different motors though). Can provide a thrill or scare on the street, but you'll get used to it.
