Checked stockgear pattern My rear gear is currently stock and I am in the middle of swapping it out. I decided to check the gear pattern since I have always had a slight howl at 60 mph under light throttle. Before I owned the car a dealer had opened the rear more than once and I think they messed around with the preload while changing the pinion seal.
The backlash measured out at .012". The pictures show the contact pattern. The coast side looks high to me but I wanted some advice. When I swap in the new gear should I increase the pinion shim as my first try to push the pattern down the teeth a little?

You may have a bad carrier bearing and the .012 backlash and the shallow coast is the result. Close up the backlash to .007-.008 and check your bearings when and if you pull it apart and adjust it yourself.
