Your mileage will vary, but just about any of the short shifters available are better than the hurst. Though it really depends on what you're looking for.
A good shifter will make a little bit more noise than the factory hurst. If that doesn't bother you, then you're good to go. My car did not even make it 2000 miles before the hurst had been ripped out and a kirban installed in its place.
I've heard very good things about the pro 5.0, Ripper, and the kirban. I've never used anything other than the kirban, but It was a MAJOR improvement over the stock hurst.
From what I have been able to see, the B&M Ripper has the shaft curved a bit over toward the driver, the pro 5.0 and kirban are straight shafted.
I know at least one sponsor is offering the rippers for ~160 shipped, and the stock hurst shifters COMMONLY sell on ebay for anywhere from 80-130 bucks. I personally sold mine for 125 after I purchased my kirban used for just under 100 bucks.

From what I'm reading here, there Pro 5.0 sound like a great shifter but it makes noise ??? I don't think i'd like the noise. I tried a buddys ripper and the only thing I noticed was that the shifter stick is shorter.
ANY after-market shifter is a major improvement over the stock Hurst. I couldn't shift from 2nd to 3rd with that Hurst to save my life. I LOVE my Ripper! It is a little noisier than the stock Hurst (mostly because of that big rubber isolator in the stick of the Hurst) but is quieter than the Pro 5.0. I have absolutely no complaints about the B&M unit.

NO!! They are not the same at all. GM hired Hurst to build our stock shifters to GM's specs, so basically it is just a POS GM shifter. What's really funny is...if you buy a 6spd car, you have to buy a Hurst, but they still charge $300 extra for the Hurst. (At least, thats what I was told by the dealer)

Anyways, the main reason the factory Hurst is also inadequate is because the shaft is still a two-piece design with a rubber isolator. Most aftermarket's are a one piece shaft with a billet aluminum (istead of stamped steel) base.
