Default blown posi?

i got my car stuck in the snow today. i got my dad's 4x4 and towed it out, but i tried rocking it out. well i finally got it in the gravel driveway. the left wheel is on gravel while the right wheel is on solid ice. the right one is the only one spinning. now to me this seems like a blown posi but i dont know if the one on gravel would lock up if the other one is spinning on solid ice. i would think it should. but idk. i didnt here any clunks or anything break. any ideas? thanks, Brandon

Assuming you have the Zexel differential, as I've been told it is either broken or working. The positraction (tm) part doesn't quit working and the car continues to drive like an Auburn cone which has worn out clutch material. The Zexel uses torque sensing parts that interlock gears to create equal traction to the axles.

When there is no resistance as you would have on ice, applying slight braking will restore the torque sensing needed to make the axles interlock. This is the down side of the Zexel Torsen (torque sensing) differential. So the next time you are stuck, apply slight braking either with the brake pedal or parking brake.

If I'm wrong here, let's hope someone comes along with a better answer.

You're certainly welcome and if you will, tell us what you get.

If the torque is too low, keep in mind that a good used Zexel with the correct number of abs channels will drop right in. I put a Zexel out of a 2000 into my 95. It's a two hour job.

I have nothing to compare because the Auburn was going out when I bought the car. The Zexel replacement just works so I went from a one wheel peeler to better traction. The Auburn has a good reputation and can last a long time but once they begin to slip due to a worn cone, they are not rebuild-able. The disadvantage of the Zexel to the Auburn is what I described earlier. If neither wheel has traction the car is without drive. A small amount of braking restores the torque sensing balance and both wheels provide drive again. Without the knowledge and action to apply the brakes in this situation, the car is dead in the water. Normally this is a rare situation. I don't believe the Auburn has this limitation. The foremost advantage of the Zexel is that it has no clutch material to wear away. I hear or see no reports of inherent structural weakness in either differential.

I bought my used Zexel replacement for $100 shipped and don't know what they cost brand new.

I hope this helps and is accurate as I'm just a hobbyist....
