Stock 3.42 have some whine..all of buddies cars with 3.42 have some whine..I think the design or the car with the hatch versus truck increases the ability to hear the whine >I have my cargo thing out also .I did dynamat the rear of car but need to still to doors, back seat area and floor..it should help a bit..after taking apart these pos stock rear ends out of like s10 minitrucks you will have no doubt they could whine and break,etc.etc..Shame on you gm!! Shame!! Shame!!
Also like was said certain aftermarket gears are really bad..Richmonds should be illegal on street cars..mine were terrible and supposedly stronger..well they didn't last one pass on buddies supercharged lt1 on et streets. And they were louder than my wife for whining...9/10 and the motive gm 4.10 gears weren't any better..the richmonds were 3.73's..Richmond =CRAP!!

Good point with the hatch thing. You also have to keep in mind that the aluminum driveshaft does a wonderful job of resonating any noise from the differential up into the passenger area. So if richmond and GM gears are crap, what do you reccomend for aftermarket?

My 1988 has the stock 10 bolt in it with 3.42 gears and Auburn posi unit and it doesn't make a peep. #.42 stock gears should not whine!! The reason for a lot of peoples whining is do to a GM screw up and not having them setup properly or something screwed up in the rear that even they cannot find. GM told me their engineers were aware of the whine problem therefore they know the whine is not normal and should not be there.
