How much whine is normal?
Also like was said certain aftermarket gears are really bad..Richmonds should be illegal on street cars..mine were terrible and supposedly stronger..well they didn't last one pass on buddies supercharged lt1 on et streets. And they were louder than my wife for whining...9/10 and the motive gm 4.10 gears weren't any better..the richmonds were 3.73's..Richmond =CRAP!!
I hope everything works out for ya. Good Luck.

PS. Just offering a little insite on my gear changes.
Good point with the hatch thing. You also have to keep in mind that the aluminum driveshaft does a wonderful job of resonating any noise from the differential up into the passenger area. So if richmond and GM gears are crap, what do you reccomend for aftermarket?

Little late on the reply but when they replaced my rearend they also put rubber 0-rings on my driveshaft to eliminate/hide any noise coming down the driveshaft...did not help one bit. My 1988 has the stock 10 bolt in it with 3.42 gears and Auburn posi unit and it doesn't make a peep. #.42 stock gears should not whine!! The reason for a lot of peoples whining is do to a GM screw up and not having them setup properly or something screwed up in the rear that even they cannot find. GM told me their engineers were aware of the whine problem therefore they know the whine is not normal and should not be there.
