Say when like starting from a dead stop in second gear. The whine will get higher in pitch as the RPMs rise, and then fade out. The tranny fluid is fine, and isn't burnt or anything. I assume its the tranny that's whining, cause when i put the clutch in the whine goes away. Is this something that i should really be concerned about?

If it is only 2nd I would worry. Why dead stop start in 2nd anyways stock p/p don't like alot of heat. You may have a torn up speed gear. b.t.w. do you have a aftermarket shifter? is it adjusted properly?

are you sure it's not the rear-end whining?? After the dealer tried to fix my rearend whine in my 02 TA it started whining in 2nd at around 25mph and at 40mph in 3rd or 4th and still at the old speed of 55-60 in 4th, 5th and 6th gear.

It could be your rear end. I would get that checked. You might have launched a little to hard with that M6. Check the fluid for silverish tint.

Well, it doesn't only do it in second, also at certain times in other gears as well at certain RPMs. But it does it most consistently when starting in second. I started noticing it after I had the pinion bearings replaced a few months ago (i kind of got more sensative to whines after that ordeal). Its not a loud whine at all, you don't hear it with the radio on. I didn't think it could be the rear cause of the fact that it goes away when i put the clutch in and I have never launched it hard or on slicks. Should i check out the diff. fluid for anything?

NO, to late it is your diff making that noise, under load from engine powering ring& pinion & vise versa. You push clutch in it takes the resistance out of the system. Sure sounds like pinion bearings again. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

I have a brand new moser 12 bolt that does this exact same thing. Did I get a bad one or is it just breaking in?

NO diffs don't make noise unless something is wrong.

I noticed it right after i got the bearings replaced. Its been doing it for like 2 months now and it hasn't gotten any worse. There is no clunking noises or anything else coming from the back. It doesn't do it all the time and the noise is barely audibe. The pitch gets higher as the RPMs go up. The guy who did the work said that the shrapnel from the bearings could have damaged other things, and that in some cases a whole new rear is the only solution, which i can't afford. I don't see why i should take that kind of measure now anyways, since there doesn't seem to be any other problem outside of a very faint noise. Are there any other solutions i can explore? Suggestions welcome. Thanks for your help

This is not a true statement: NO diffs don't make noise unless something is wrong. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

You should hear my 5.14 gears whine and their is nothing wrong with them. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />

My 4.56 gear were pretty loud also. <img border="0" alt="[devil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />

It is just the nature of the beast! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Good luck to ya. <img border="0" alt="[angel]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_angel.gif" />

If it hasn't changed I'd leave it & see what happens. IT will let you know if something is going>I.E. noise. B.T.W. this thread we were talking about daily drivers' street car diffs' I thought, not cars with cement truck gears! They should'nt make a ton of noise either, whoever set them up feed you a line.

My Hot Rod is a daily driver and Madman set up the gears brother. <img border="0" alt="[devil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />

Maybe you should tell this to Madman that he can't set up gears. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" />

Just maybe we know what we are talking about here! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

lets all compare apples to apples, he has a stock 3.42 GM gears that are suppose to be quiet and make no noise if setup correctly. My dealer has messed with mine 3 times and I still have noise except now at 30 and 40 mph in the rear along with the common 55-60 whine. These new cars are using a 2-cut gear (no taper on the teeth, same thickness from tip to base of tooth) which also have a different setup than the old 5-cut gears in the 99 models maybe 2000 also. The metal content in the high performance gears do cause normal noise (such as Richmonds) but stock GM gears should be quiet!

When they replaced the pinion bearing they could have not got the pinion depth right (i.e. used old shim when it needed to be a different thickness). Also some shops will try and cut corners by not replacing the crush sleeve which causes more problems when trying to torque the pinion nut down correctly...and so on. My whine can be heard over the radio at a good listening level and with the windows down.

There are many factors that could cause whine, gear type, metal content, screwed up bearings, or the most common....someone not setting it up properly! ANyone can take a rear apart and put it back together but it takes a lot of experience to do it so it's quiet unless it is a hi-po rear end and gears which even some of those are quiet.

Sounds like yours is pretty quiet and may be part to do with the tranny, these things do have some whine in them as mine does also. I can hear a tranny whine in mine at lower speeds but they say they have had this since 1993 in all the 6-speeds.

Sometimes you can experience gear whine because the of way gears are cut and has nothing to do with the set up. My gears are a little noisy in my 12 bolt(3.73).I had it checked out and everything was set up properly.

Stock rear no noise cement truck not TONS OF NOISE. We're talkin' stock stuff here, don't ya got some tree stump to pull out with your truck or something. No-body is rippin' on your guy or rear. Just read entire thread from begining & then offer advice that might pertain to ZeeQuick's problem. I don't think he gives a s#@% your 5.14 make noise.

My question was answered to my satisfaction, so everything is cool. I think what it could be is that the guy just didn't set it back up perfectly, he is a GM tech, but probably not a rear-end specialist. And he did screw up the position of my coil springs while he was at it, so.... Just hope that my noise doesn't get any worse, which it hasn't yet.
