Default Did I avoid transmission death?

On the way home from work I noticed smoke coming out from behind me, not sure what it was, I got to the right one lane, then went to accelerate to get over one more lane, NO GEARS in D. I got to a light drop to 3, turned right babied and coasted far as I could, ~1.5 mi.!,(curbed no turn off). Then I had to stop and nothing left. Pushed to station. My hose to my transmission cooler had come off. I'd lost 5.5 qts of fluid. I put a new hose clamp on filled with fluid, seems to run fine. Should it have been alright or did I get lucky? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

The smoke was your tran fluid smoking on your exhaust.

As for the transmission, you *might* be OK as long as everything did not get too hot. That you were able to keep moving indicates you kept some fluid (otherwise the torque converter wouldn't work).

Hope the best for you.

It sounds like you'll be ok IF it happened real fast & you repaired it. Heat is what kills automatics.

Same thing happened to me...twice!! Luckly, I have a tranny temp gauge and was able to monitor the temp. It never got above 150 either time, and it's still working fine. Guess I got lucky too.
