new gears installed new gears,4.10 in my 98z it has some whining.is this normal.i went from a factory 3.42 with a m6 tranny.i like the take off and rpm range better for every day driving.i realy could not use 6th gear befor[legaly].i had bad 60 times and i could take off at no more than 1800 rpm's and even with drag radials i was limitted to 2400rpm's.my best time was a 13.65 at 103.5 mph.i seam to launch much better with less wheel spin.i have 255/50/16's on the back.i would like to find out what aprox max mph in 4th gear.thanks for any help you can give me. ed f
Re: new gears If your gears are whining from the beginning, either they were not installed right or you did not properly break them in.

Re: new gears THE WHINNING IS NOT BAD.I CAN LET OFF THE GAS AND THE WHINE GOES AWAY.IT'S JUST DURING ACCELERATION.I DID ADJUST MY SPEEDO WITH MY HPP3.THE SPEED SHOP I GOT MY GEARS FROM DID NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT A SPECIAL BREAK IN PROCEDURE.I HAD TO HAVE GEARS INSTALLED.I AM A DISABLED VET.I CAN NOT DO ALOT OF THE MECHANICAL WORK MYSELF.I HAVE TO RELY ON OTHERS.SPINAL INJURY.THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP. Re: new gears I also have a 98 Z28 M6 and just put in the 4.10s. I have a slight whine in mine I have learned to deal with it. I,ve talked to alot of people said its normal. I love the difference in acceleration. I've heard that richmond gears whine more than the rest motive and GM tend to have less whine . Next time you get a chance there is a great track down here in Ga in reynolds called silver dollar and it will get you some good times. Normally 3tenths quicker than the track in north Ga. Your car should be in the 12s down here. I beleive it has alot to do with elevation and probably good traction down there at silver dollar. Good luck runnin them gears.

Re: new gears thanks for the info.I was stationed at FT Gorden thats in the city of agusta.I was there in 1985 for some electronics school while in the army.Ihad a 70 1/2 Z28.there were tons of nice cars.Do you live near there? ed f

Re: new gears I have 4.11's and have some whine. From what I read the break-in period is 15-20mi under light load then a cool down period. After that stay off the throttle for 200 miles. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
