m6 or a4? either way it will still be a big difference. I think they are worth if but some people would say on an m6 go 3.73 and on an a4 go 4.10. The 4.10 on an a4 may seem a kinda short gear but the A4 has plenty for it. I have an m6 with 4.10 and i still average around 20 mph on the highway pulling a lil over 2100 rpm at 70.

You only need three full heat cycles and the gears are broken in. Drive for 10 miles or so, then let cool for a half hour. Repeat 2 more times and you're good to go.

For the threadstarter, go with some 4.10's. It will really wake up your car.

4.10's are great when you put a decent cam in, drives more like stock. As for break in, 1-3 heat cycles at most.

I never went to the track on my 3.42's but in my 96 z28 i had 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10's and i really liked the 4.10's (only had 4.10 to the track). I couldn't really tell much of a difference between the 3.73's and 3.42's but the 4.10 made a noticable difference. It will kill your top speed but you'll get up and going a bit quicker.
In my 2000 z28 i swapped my 12 bolt in and the 3.42 10 bolt felt like a dog compared to my 4.10 geared 12 bolt.

I think you're confused. 4.10's on an A4 would be really steep for them. 4.10's are better for the M6 over the A4.

It depends on your power output if you can pull 6th gear, if your an m6 like me, to 161mph. Personally i've just been to 150 and could care less if i drive that fast top speed. I think after i swapped in the 12 bolt with 4.10 all i could muster was 140 in my 96 and i haven't been that high with the 2000 yet.

4:10's make a huge difference in seat of the pants feel, but in a 10 bolt break real easily. I had them in my last F-Body and broke a ring gear every couple of months on Nittos. They were great from a roll but never helped me do a damn thing but spin at the track and if I was breaking them easily on Nittos stickier tires were out of the question. As for top end as said earlier unless you have major power to pull top end in 6th you will lose some top end but who the hell needs to go 161mph anyway?

What about if you have 400+ to the rear. would 4.10's render it useless by spinning tires all the time? I'm debating on a set of 3.90's myslef.

not til you get a cam that will make more top end power/until you raise your rev limiter over 6200.

I dont understand what you mean by your question..

Yes I would recommend 4.10s with that cam, sinc eyou have more high end power, you may lose lower RPM torque, so 4.10s will pull you out of the hole faster.

and yes your top speed should still be high in 5th , since that cam makes more high end power than a stock cam would..

^^^You couldn't put that all into one post?? Gosh dang'd post wh0r3's! LOL, JP!

If you're M6 you wanna go with 4.10's, if you have an A4, you'll wanna go with 3.73's.

That's the trend on LS1tech, and I'd trust these guys.

I did 4.10's in just about all of my M6's. They flat out wake the car up. I picked up 3-5mph at the strip and dropped about 3-4 10ths. Only problem is the rear end can only handle so many launches with them. If you can come up with the money, buy a rear end instead of spending $600 plus on getting gears in.
