Default pinion bearings

how hard is it to remove the outer pinion bearing,behind the yoke? Is it a press fit like the inner bearing? I removed mine today and it was hell to remove the pinion gear, is this normal?

Mine was not hard at all. I think I just pushed it out with my hand. I was surprised it was so easy cause when I put the new one on I had to get it started so enough was sticking out. I do no think it could be a bad thing just maybe a newer gear that has been installed with tighter clearances.

They are supposed to be a slip fit. Being able to tap it out with a dead blow hammer is still considered a slip fit. Its really tight, and if you get it ****-eyed the slightest bit, it will bind and make it harder to get off. As long as its not seized on there, you are ok. The new bearing will most likely be harder to install/remove.

Warming it up a bit helps too. Dont use an oxy/acl. torch on it..just warm it up alittle and it will slip on easier.

thanks i got new bearings today. I was told to put one in frezzer overnight and the other in the oven. Does it matter which you heat and which you cool .. pinion vs bearings?

Well, you can put the pinion in the freezer overnight and put the bearings in the oven at 400F for 10 minutes before installation. But I only do that for the inner bearing. The outer bearing should slip in when you torque down the pinion nut without heating it up.

BTW, make sure you have the correct shims before putting the new inner bearing. You can use your old bearings and hone inside the inner bearing so it slips in and out easily. Once you have the correct shim thickness, swap to new bearings for the final assembly.
