to go from carrier 2 to 3, or not to go?
I have A4 with 2.73 and that means i have carrier #2; I'm going to do upgrade to 3.42 and that can carrier 2 or 3.
I've been told that carrier #3 is stronger, isit true? Is it worth it ?
If so, what do I need besides Thunder Racing 7.5" 10 bolt GM Complete Gear Package to go from carrier #2 to #3?
Thanks a bunch <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Tom, The only reason the 3 carrier is stronger is because the ring gear is thinner for steeper gears. If you look at a set of say...3.73 gears for a 2 series carrier they are real thick..thus more give.
Basically what I am confusing myself by sayin is <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> that the gear mounting surface on a 3 series is thicker.
You'll need a 3 series carrier, ring and pinion, bearings...presumably these will be on the new carrier already..., crush collar, shims, and seals.
The install kits usually come with the bearings, collar, seals and shims.
I dont know if Thunder sells the new carrier with the kit. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />
Also get someone who knows how to set them up properly.
Good luck, Stu

I change from the 2.73's with the 2 series carrier to 3.42's and bout a 3 series Zexel-Torsen carrier from SLP. It worked great. It was in there for over 2 years and many trips down the drag strip & was still fine when I traded the car in.
