Default Rear-end whine

My friend has an 02 Z28 that he got about 2 months ago and since he bought it there is a loud whine/grinding noise that comes from his rear-end. You can hear it inside and out. My thoughts were that the gear fluid doesnt contain the friction additive so thats why its making the noise. But he is sure the gears are bad and is about to pay 600+ bucks tp fix it. Does anyone have any opinions or past experiences that may help?

I would pull the cover and check the bearings out.

You know you need more additive when it makes squeaks and creeks in turns, but it shouldnt do anything going straight. If its a straight up grinding sound, it could be the gears or the bearings or both. Best thing would be to pull the over, and see whats going on in there.

It has a constant whine when he hits the gas and when hes rolling and no gas.

Could be the bearings. Don't worry, it'll be pretty obvious that they need to be replaced after looking at them.

Pull the cover and drain the fliud and look for shavings, that's a start.

Ok sounds good, can the bearing be done as a DIY job or do we have to take it in to a shop.I have a real good amount of experience with working on cars (mainly mustangs) so the chances for me to do it are good right?. If so how much does that run.

Does he have the 10 bolt or another rear end like a 12 bolt? The 12 bolt is gonna whine after a while.

An '02 car would have come with a Torsen differential. Those do not require the additive.

His car is completely stock, so I dont know how many bolts I think its a 10 bolt. How hard is it to replace the bearing and where can we find bearing?

my SS has a whining sound as well..i had the fluids replaced today and it seemed to help a little bit..my cars rear is not clunking or grinding..it almost sounds like it could be a driveshaft problem..maybe an unbalanced one?? my car has an aluminum ds..
