Default Stall and Gears

I have a stock auto 98 t/a thinking about putting a stall and gears in it this winter. It is my DD. I was thinking 3500 stall and 3.90s? What do you guys think?

Sounds like a good plan to me. I think I'd rather have 3.73 though for a DD.

Might be a good idea, you think having a stall and gears really effect gas milage alot?

well, i just did a set of motive 3.90s and when i return from Iraq i will be doing a yank 3600 stall. i couldnt imagine going smaller with the gears. It will affect your highway milage but i dont see it as really that serious to make me regret going that steep.

I went 3.73 pre-stall and it was awesome, now that I have my convertor Im going to 4.10, i would go with the high ratio because with the convertor your at higher rpms anyway.

when I went to 373s over 273s I gained a few mpg in my area with the stock gears od was rarely used....with the 4000 stall I dont think I lost any ....o nce at cruising speeds the verter locks and its just like stock...

do it both together on stickie tires should net you .6 or better in the 1/4 and it makes the car so much funner to drive.....

It depends on the purpose of the car. The general concensus has been that a N/A car should use 3.73 for the best quarter mile. A F/I car should use 3.42. At the time, 3.90 was not an option. 4.11 is considered good for M6, since they are so overdriven.
AFA fuel economy, certainly, it will go down. Just do the math.
Best of luck.

I have 3.90 with a 3600 and I like it. Great combination, but If I had a bigger cam I would go larger(more) on both. For a stock or mild cam they are good choices, although I have seen guys run 4400 stalls and 4.10's with stock cams and good results- but I would bet the driveability suffers noticeably more.

i recently put in a new rear with 3.73's. just ordered a yank ss36oo to go along with it. i wouldn't go any steeper than the 3.73's with that stall in an a4 for a dd.

Yea i was thinking if i went with a 3600 stall 373s should be good, plus im still on stock 10 bolt so it has to last with weekend trips to the strip. How much should I expect to pick up in the 1/4?

I have a stock 99 trans am. I had 3.73 and loved it. Car went a best of 13.29 at 104 with no other changes.

Broke the rear end and went back to the 3.23. I miss the 3.73. I am gun shy to race the car now.
