Default 6th gear burn out your gears?

I recently took a 3 hour trip over 550 miles round trip. And now my 3.73 gears whine loud as hell.

Took it to the mechanic who installed and he says I probably burned them up because I ran them in 6th the whole time.

Is what he is sayin true?

I havent taken it apart neither did the shop. I was hoping it was possibly just the pinion gear.

Should I get a different opinion?

are you serious?? lol no thats not the case, I ran my car with the 3.42's in 6th no problems, run my new 4.10's that I installed in 6th gear no problem. I'd say he installed them wrong.

Gears been in for a yr now. No problems until the trip. And I did have a bent axle in an accident 2 months after the install.

So what could of happened?

it may be an axle bearing that is whining but there is no way in hell that crusing in 6th will burn your gears up that is for sure

I hate to rip on your mechanic, but that is the biggest load of bullshit I have ever heard. It does not make a difference what gear you were in, your gears should last a long time if they were installed properly.

All the above points are valid, but since you have been driving it for a year, you may be out of luck trying to get the mechanic to repair it.

Good luck either way.

The gear that you are in makes no difference...your RPM's make no difference...the only thing that matters is your speed.

You could be in 3rd gear at 80MPH or 6th gear at 80MPH, the rear end gears are still going to be turning the same speed, which is the same as rear tires.

Has to be something else going on hear. I have 4.10's put my car in 6th all the time, and have 0 whine, and never have. Good luck on getting him to take car of it for you.

Maybe talk to gear manufacturer and see what they say. If anyone knows there product should be them...

One question, if the shop ends up pulling the differential to install a new bearing what parts do I need to supply?

He ain't no mechanic and is a knucklehead to boot to come up with that kind of BS. Had he installed the gearset correctly it would not have made any noise in the first place. I wouldn't trust my car with that dude again.
