Default Straightening A Bent Axle

Any one ever had a machine shop straighten out a bent axle? My 30 spline axle on the driver's side is about 15-20 thousandths out. I first noticed it on the dyno about 3 months ago. Its a year old Moser 12 bolt. Moser hasn't responded yet to my email re warranty service, so I'm looking at having it fixed, if possible.

I'm by no means an expert on anything, but I think it will be hard to make true. And if it was straightened, I believe that it would weaken the axle. It may be possible to take out the studs and put in a lathe to kiss the face, but that is not something I would try. I would stay on Moser. Surely they will stand behind their product.

I'm pretty sure that Moser will replace an bent axle, but only the 33 splines and up. Those of use with the 30 splines are SOL (I also run the 30 spline axles. Here is the replacement policy page on the Moser site.

I just got off the phone with Moser. SOL on the warranty. It only applies to broken axles 33 spline and up. Replacement will cost 145.00 + 40.00 for the bearing kit and studs. I'm gonna check with the local machine shops re straightening. Its just bent enough to cause some squeeking on the disc brake pads when slowing to a stop.

Only my opinion, but I would NEVER run a axle which had been attempted to be straightened, either by heating the piece, or cold-bending it. Especially, being used in high-performance applications... This is one instance where you have to step up to the plate and buy a new piece--your safety and maybe your life could depend on it. That'll cost ya some.

Brother J,

my car is in the shop right now having the Moser 12 bolt installed, my 10 bolt had Moser 30 spline axle shafts in it. If you are interested when I get the 10 bolt back I could sell you the 30 splined axles cheap <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> , let me know.
