Wow, having to add .009 pinion shim is really way too much. What was your final shim thickness?

I think it ended up being 21 total, thus after the gears ground up by
doing what they said "drive it around and see if it quiets down"
Ill call moser tomorow and see what they will do. I cant send it to them
first because its my only car at this time. if they do nothing. I just have to
buy a set of gears and set it up myself. There parts seem great quality,
the set up is just rushed or something.

Yeah... the only time I have used anything that low... was with really deep gears or 8620 Pro set's.

I've set up 9310 Pro gears in a few M/W cases and they are around .015-.018 with ball bearing pinion supports instead of the large taper bearing style.

Yeah... well they dont make 8620 Pro sets any more. I think the last time I actually saw a set was back in the late 80's. The new ones ahve been on the lower end of the scale, as you noted. Hell... on that note, for the standard 8620 street gears they have been between 0.018 to 0.028"

0.012" is still rather odd tho...

I am expecting to see something similar. It still has noise, can't say anything has improved. Got 150 miles oin it now, its coming apart. Something ain't right.

How many miles had you put on yours?

HI I put around 200 light miles on it, then said screw it and went to the track,
A few 1.7 60 ft runs and on the way home it got really stupid loud!!!!!!
whan I took it appart the gears were scored + verry un-evenly worn.
I ordered motives from my local speed shop ($180)
I will install them wed. night.....if I just checked the pattern in the begining
they would be fine but moser said to drive it, they suck

Whose gear set is in it? Motive, Richmond, or US Gear. I have heard the Motives are usually quiet.

Same here. Shud have checked it before I put it in. Im gonna put new gears in this winter. I've assembled alot of gears and never had this much noise. Mine is really loud and annoying. My girlfriend wont even ride in it any more.

Motive Performance or Strange pro street gears are top of the line IMO. I tend to stay away from Richmond, Motive blue box, Zoom, and now Precision Gears unless the customer brings or demands them.

So I put in my new gears today because moser screwed up my first set,
and I find a ring gear spacer?????I may be new to the 9 in. but isn't that
what you use when you dont have the right carrier, is this normal?
or did they screw me even worse than I thought

Default Noisy Moser Center Section - BRAND NEW!

I have heard this about Motive gears more than once being a good way to go, did not know about a 'blue' box set though.
thanks for the info.

I see I am not the only one with a complaint on Moser pre-assembled center sections, what a shame..... well that is why I put this thread out here. At least the housing was nice or wait a minute, should I slide a narrowing jig through the axle tubes to be sure they are straight so that it won't kill the axles/ and or bearings in 5k while it is apart?

Can you tell I am a little T'd off?

man, how can Moser do this? you'd think they would save money in the long haul if they setup their gears right the first time. but from what i'm hearing in this thread moser just gives you a big "f*** you" when you call em up and say that the rear is setup wrong. this is discouraging.

I also feel screwed by Moser my 9" was ordered with a complete aluminum center section that has leaked from the pinion seal from day one and with less then 30 passes no more posi just one wheel pulling. So much for the Auburn posi upgrade. The rear was always loud and when you talk with them on the phone you get alot of bullshit.
