Default Gear question

I have 2002 Trans Am A4 with 2.73 gears right now, but my friend has a 2002 WS6 M6 with 3.42 gears. He will be getting a rearend in a little while so I was wondering would his gears work in my car, would I have to buy any additional kits? Also is this a smart idea to be getting used gears?

If you opt to change to the 3.42 gearing, you will have to change the carrier. He has a 3 series carrier, you have a 2 series. You can do this swap w/his gears, (about a 100$ for an SLP takeoff).
I would opt for another change, if you're into performance: get a higher stall torque converter.
Pay no attention to what the pansies in the car mags say, a 3500 stall behind an LS1 -with 2.73 gears-kicks ***.

Eventually I would like a SY3500 or if I don't go the Yank route I will go with a Midwest 3000-3200/2.0

I want higher gears so that it doesn't feel loose.
All I want to do is hit 12.2-12.7 and i'll be happy. I think either of those TC's with gears, headers, tires would get me into that range

I definitely understand that some can't deal with the looseness a high stall and 2.73 gears bring.
My wife never understood the difference until I asked her to "punch it" from a 45 MPH roll.
When she pulled it out of the ditch she said "sheeeeeeit!".
There is no better bang for the buck than a 3500 stall and 2.73 gears. I have kicked some big time *** with an internally stock engine.

GWJ- Actually I have no clue what looseness feels like, I have read description after description after description and I still can't figure out what it feels like? So i'll have to test drive someones car to see how I like it.

Also your 1 post away from 1000, your sitting on 999 right now

2002, no matter what anyone says, a torque converter change is, well, a personal choice. I admit a 3500+ stall for a 2.73 is not for everyone. There are many fans of the Vig 3200, Yank 2800-3000, and I can see their point. Sometimes I get a little tired of the 3K rpm at moderate throttle, but then again, I can punch it and hold 3500 rpm and the car feels like a rocket.
Ain't it nice to have choices, finally, for our cars?
BTW, I had no chance to drive ANY stall converter'd LS1 before I bought my ST3500.
I wanted performance; Lots of tough Mustangs around here. For someone that drives mostly town w/a 2.73 I would reccomend a 3200 or less stall.
Peace.

Thats 1000 posts for ya <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Thanks for the help too.....I was thinking maybe a Yank 3000 also or maybe a vig2800......I'll make my decision when I am done paying my bills, but the frontrunners are the
SY3500, Yank 3000, Vig2800, or Midwest 3000-3200/2.0
