Default How bad is a 1-2 Shift Solonoid Perf Stuck Open ?

Just had my car in for a differential check, ls1 edit, and dyno tune. Told not to worry about the clunk on the 1-2 shift. I have had the car for three days now, the engine surges at 40 mph, and the SES light just came on with the message that the 1-2 shift solonoid is stuck open.

How bad is this?

The soleniods are not too expensive to replace.

1. What causes the 1-2 shift solonoid to go out (15,000 miles on the tranny)

2. Does the tranny have to be pulled out?

3. Is this a $300 to $500 repair, or more?

could be programming related or gunk in the tranny.

Closer to $300, but it depends on your shop.

What is involved in changing the solenoid?

What are the symptoms of a bad solenoid?

How could this be missed on inspection?

John, I couldn't find pricilla's email.

If anyone can offer me any insight in these 1-2 and 2-1 shift problems, please post your thoughts.

I have been spending money for months trying to get this fixed and I need all the help I can get.

Thanks

Bob

I have had this code for 3 years now and no problems with the shift from 1st-2nd. When the shift selinoid goes it goes from what i have seen in my area. I know a guy personaly that had problems with his and it caused his car to not shift at all. If you pay $200-$300 to get someone to change them out then your getting riped off. My tranny builder charges $50 to change them for labor and i pay for the selinoids and tranny fluid. Mine started after the converter swap and from what he told me most of the time it is just sludge or dirt that gets in them and causes them to get stuck in the on and off mode. IF they have never been changed and your worried about it then get them changed but don't overpay IMO because they are just underneath the pan on the tranny and very easy to get to.

What does the 1-2 shift solenoid do?

What affect does a bad 1-2 solenoid have?

Fast,

Mine does the same thing, the code is PO751 I believe. The solenoids are easy to get to, just drop the pan, the 1-2 solenoid is at the very back on the right hand side lookng forward, it's probably just got some junk in it, take it out, spray it wth brake clean and reinstall it. You really can't tell any difference other than the annoying occasional SES light.

Can you tell what affect a bad 1-2 shift solonoid would have?

Could the solenoid code and SES light be caused by overaggresive programming?

I had the P0751 code and it had no effect other than the annoying light. I deleted the code in edit and have no idea if the problem still exists, so I would not worry too much if the car drives fine.

I've replaced them in my formula. If you would go WOT the 1-2 would delay before it would shift. It didn't slip just pause. Second gear would hit real hard when it caught. I also changed the o ring on the 2-3 solenoid because it was out of shape and made it wobble in the valvebody. That fixed all of my shifting problems.

Not caused by over aggressive programming it just happens... maybe junk floated in your fluid and gummed it up.

I have had the P0751 code a few times (if this is what you're getting) and it never affected performance on my Y2K Z28. I've heard of different effects on the '01 - 02s, though.
As far as replacing a solenoid, no way I would pay someone more than $50 labor + parts, fluid, to do it IF I was handy enough / had the time / to change my own tranny fluid/filter. The solenoids are easy to get to when you drop the pan.
Could be your real problem is not the solenoid at all. MANY folks w/01-02 cars have had this problem with some aftermarket converters, and I have the one that seems to cause the most probs, the ST3500.
But, like I said, it causes no performance probs for me, and I never got the code until I had about 25K on the TC.

Why is it that when I manually shift 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 (and back down) the shift is perfectly smooth, BUT when I auto shift it is bang and thump?

Another Question: How good is the multipurpose ATF used at Jiffy Lube (and the others) that meets all Mercron, Dextron, requirements?

I am thinking about the 100% transmission and TC fluid change with the generic ATF
