Default Paging Patrick G.

Pat,

I'd like your advise on switching converters. I have a H/C 99T/A, Moser 12 bolt, Vig3200 and NX GM EFI kit. The car makes 400RWHP,413.5 RWTQ N/A and is my daily driver. I regularly cut low 1.60 60ft N/A, 1.59s N20(only 7 Passes), 7.72s N/A, 7.33s N20 and am thinking about going with a new converter. I would like to go 6s in the 1/8th and need a better 60ft to get there. I've been looking at the Yank SS4000E, I need to know how streetable you think that converter is. It has a 2.60 STR and should hit the tires alot harder than the Vig at the track but I'm concerned about it's street manners. What do you think? What's the best converter for me? TIA,

Mark

Mark,

To get in the 6s, remember you're going to need very sticky tires and really good susupension components to hook up. ET Streets are marginal once you go below 1.60 unless the track is prepped extremely well. Drag slicks are more of the trick.

If you're putting down 400 rwhp on motor, then you are merely a jet size away from hitting the 6s on nitrous. Because your nitrous 60' times are only 1.59, I suspect tire spin. No converter in the world is going to help you get those 60's into the 1.4s (where you'll need to be for 6s) without better traction first. OK, as long as you realize that 6s will take a team effort from your tires and suspension, let's look at converter options.

If you want 6s on motor, it's possible, but it will take some work. First, you need lots of gear. I you run 26" tall tires, then 4.10 gears are what you'll need. 28.5" tall tires will require you to run 4.56 gears. OK, now the stall. A Yank Pro Thruster 4600 is the way to go on motor. No need to look any further. Do all this, along with keeping your weight down low and 6s in the 1/8th and 10s on motor will be yours.

Now if you're like me, you probably don't want to run all that gear in your daily driver. Not a problem. With nitrous, you can run 6's with 2.73 gears, LOL! Take care of your traction issues and you can easily hit 6's with your Vig 3200. The Vig 3200 is one of my favorite all-around converters so it's hard for me to recommend a converter above it, but I will. <img border="0" alt="[devil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />

The Yank Super Stock 4000 will give you better 60' times than the Vig 3200 on motor and it will be better suited to putting down more rwhp on the nitrous due to its higher efficiency. But remember my warning about traction. A SS4000 converter will absolutely punish your tires on motor, let alone on the jug. In my estimation, the Yank SS4000 will drop your 1/4 mile times on motor at least a tenth over the Vig 3200 and pick up your mph around 1. On the nitrous, it will be an even greater gain (especially in the mph).

As long as you run at least a .062 nitrous jet, 6's should be a piece of cake.

Patrick,

I always run 26x10.5x16 ET streets at the track. My suspension is as follows, Eibach Pro kit, HALs all 4 corners, GW torque arm, GW pan hard rod, GW LCAs, custom made LCA relocation brackets, KB DD SFCs. I have a new Moser 12 bolt with 3:73s, stock 4L60E with a Transgo shift kit, Vig 3200 converter and a B&M trans cooler. Taking your advise I started looking at drag slicks. I have the Weld drag lites with skinnes up front so I guess I'm going to look at the Welds for the rear also. I know Trevor D has the convo pros on his SS and I kind of like those too. I think I'm going to have to go with 15" though as there aren't that many 16" drag slicks available. What size and what brand slicks do you recommend? Once I can get it dead hook then I'm going to get the Yank SS4000E. Again TIA,

Mark

I like the Hoosier Slicks in the 28.5" tall size. You'd need to run more gear to have good times on motor, but you'd be fine on nitrous. The taller the slick, the larger the footprint.
