Default Rear Gear Questions

I have an 02 SS A4 car with 3.23 gears. Car turns about 2100 rpm at 70 mph. Want to increase performance without hurting daily driveability. Should I go with 3.42 or 3.73 gears? Is it worth it? Do they use the same carrier? How much of a decrease in et can be expected? What rpm will it turn at 70 mph with a 3.73? Possible torque converter change in the future so I need to keep them compatible.

go 3.73, it helps drivability and barely decreases mpg.
- uses same carrier
- probably around a .15 ET reduction
- about 2400rpms at 70mph in 4th

later,
Steve

What size tire are you planning on running. A larger tire diameter will reduce your over all gear ratio. If you are running a tire that is larger than the stock 245/50/16 or 275/40/17 which both equal about a 25.7 tire diameter I would say go with the 3.73 at the very least and possible look at going with 4.10's or even higher. The real question is what RPM and MPH do you want to be hitting at the end of the traps?

i got an A4 and i swaped from the 3.23s to 3.73s and i love them. at 70 my rpms are at 3000, but i dont know if that is right because i put in white face gauges and i may have messed up the rpms. but im pretty sure that its right. and it wont hurt ur driveability. i drive my car about 60 miles every day. and i just took a 14 hour drive to illinois and a 14 hour drive back.

Get a converter. A gear swap to 3.73 will affect your highway MPG by 2-3 but a converter won't touch it <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
