Default How good is the stock torsen rear?(kinda long)

I'm getting ready to get rid of the sh&tty 2.73's and I'm having a hard time deciding on what to do about the carrier. I've got three choices: keep the stock 2 series and get thick gears, get a stock 3 series from SLP, or get an aftermarket like Auburn or Eaton. Its my understanding that the torsen doesnt use clutches so theoreticly it should last until something breaks on the inside right? Obviously my best choice would be to buy an aftermarket carrier but if the stock one is decent it would be alot cheaper to go that route. I dont do alot of drag racing my main concern is when I want to show my a$$ I dont want to show only one side of it <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> My car is just bolt ons for now, and a TCI 3500 will be going in when the gears do. TIA
Chris

Strength wise they're probably very close. Torsen will obviously outlast the clutch type. It actually works better then the clutch type on corners too. I would just keep it.

I just noticed you have the 2 series one. You'll probably want a 3 series Torsen for 3 series gears. I still don't know if thick cut gears are better or worse.

Thanks DOM. Thats kinda what I was thinking. About the 2 series, I read somewhere that because the ring gear mounting flange is thinner, it lets the ring gear deflect more under high tq. Obviously this isnt good, and can cause you to chew off some teeth.

The Torsen is a great diff, I put it in my '94 about 3 years ago and it's been a great diff. I use to autox and do track days with that car a lot, it held up great. My '01 Hawk has the Auburn, I blew that up my 2nd time at the drag strip with only 6400 miles on the car! It's also less progressive than the zexel, actually i'd say it's abrupt. Also getting the clutches flushed every 6000 miles is a pain in the ***, and it does need it otherwise i start getting clutch chatter.

Yea I'm not to impressed with the Auburn unit. I had one the 8.5" rear in my 72 nova that lasted about 3000 miles before it crapped out. Looks like I'm gonna go with a 3 series torsen. Thanks guys.
